Civic Type R Prototype An Aggressive Preview

Unveiled at the 2016 Paris Auto Show, the very aggressive Honda Civic Type R Prototype is a thinly altered version of the production 10th Generation Civic Type R. This is a truly big deal for American enthusiasts, as it will mark the first time ever that a Civic Type R, the ultra-performing Civic model, will be made for and sold in the US market.

The Civic Type R will be built on the Civic 5-door hatchback body style, which is coming to the American market this fall. The hatch will initially be available in LX, Sport, EX, EX-L, and Sport Touring trims, all of which come with Honda’s 1.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine. Transmission choices for the hatchback will be six-speed manual or CVT automatic transmissions, making this the first Civic to offer a manual with the turbo.

Civic Type R Prototype Coming To SEMA

The Civic Type R Prototype will make its American debut at the SEMA Show in Las Vegas in early November. Official unveiling of the production model is in 2017, with the Si model also being revealed then.

Distinguishing features of the Civic Type R Prototype include a unique exterior wrap in a highly reflective, finely-grained brushed aluminum-effect finish. In front, the fascia is accentuated with a winged carbon fiber splitter and sporty red accent line. Additional slatted ducts widen the fascia, with diamond-mesh inserts in the sculpted air intakes. Honda’s red “H” badge, standard on all Type R models, is placed prominently on the front grille.

Hood Scoop Included

The hood features a central air scoop, most likely to feed an intercooler designed to reduce the turbocharged engine’s intake air temperature. The LED headlights and indicator lights are fitted with smoked lenses.

Carbon fiber side skirts run the length of the side sills, between 20-inch gloss black alloy wheels with red accents and 245-section high-performance tires. A carbon fiber diffuser runs below the rear fascia, which frames three fully functional tailpipes. The smaller diameter central tailpipe is highlighted in bright metallic red. The Civic Type R Prototype also adds vortex generators at the rear edges of the roof, pointing backward toward the huge rear wing.

Final details of the Civic Type R’s mechanical specifications have not yet been released. Rumors of as much as 340 horsepower have been alleged, which could put the Civic Type R in the same class as the Focus RS. Bring it on, Honda!

Proudly Made In The UK

The next generation Civic Type R was developed jointly by Honda R&D teams in Europe and Japan. It will be produced exclusively at the Honda of the UK plant in Swindon, which is where all Civic five-door hatchbacks will be made. British car fans, you now have one more option!
