Best Crossover SUV: Check Out the Best 2017 Has to Offer

Finding the best crossover SUV is a tall order. Crossover SUVs are the most popular and fastest-growing segment, so automakers are trying to create the next hit.

Crossover SUVs are, at their core, an SUV developed on a passenger car platform. Its underpinnings are a unibody design, and they’re geared more toward people who want more space and comfort than an off-road vehicle. In other words, they appeal to almost everyone.

Some carmakers hit it on the head, like the all-new 2017 Honda CR-V. Others, like the Mitsubishi Outlander, fall short of the mark by a long shot. We’ve compiled a list of options of what we think could be considered the best crossover SUV on the market for 2017.

2017 Mercedes-Benz GLS-Class

No surprise, the best crossover SUV could easily be from the luxury carmaker Mercedes-Benz. Its full complement of elegant options brings its price well above $65,000, but it’s still a crossover. It’s a handsome package and has techie items like cross-wind assist, an available air ionization system and seating for up to seven.

Each GLS-Class model has AWD and a nine-speed automatic transmission. Attached to the gearbox are engine options including a 362-hp twin-turbo V6 in the GLS450, a 449-hp twin-turbo V8 in the GLS550, and a 255-hp diesel engine in the GLS350d.

2017 Kia Soul

Tickling the $17,000 sticker price is the 2017 Kia Sou. It’s definitely the best crossover SUV if you’re on a tighter budget. Despite its small size, it’s practical and has decent cargo space. What’s more, the Kia Soul is a riot to pilot.

Obviously, for its price you don’t get a ton of high-end features. You’ll get the basic power options along with either a 1.6-liter or 2.0-liter engine with 130 or 161 hp respectively. The 201-hp four-cylinder and a dual-clutch transmission are a nice touch for extra money.

2017 Honda CR-V

It’s been a popular topic in the segment since its redesign. The 2017 CR-V reiterates its versatility and dependability once again in an all-new package. You’ll find some fantastic options in the higher end models such as active driver safety systems and nice touches of leather, all starting at around $25,000.

Two engine choices are available: either the 184-hp 2.4-liter inline-4 or the 190-hp 1.5-liter turbo. It comes with one of the best CVT transmissions on the market, and Honda’s i-VTM4 AWD system is an available option.

2017 Jeep Cherokee

The most recognized name in SUVs is Jeep, and the 2017 Cherokee hangs its hat on that. It’s built more rugged than the majority of crossovers, possibly even appealing to light off-road use. The interior can be the run-of-the-mill power options, or you can jazz it up with the decadence of the Grand Cherokee in higher trim levels like the Trailhawk.

What’s important here is the powertrain, right? The standard option is a 184-hp 2.4-liter I4, or you can upgrade to the 271-hp 3.2-liter V6. Either way, an impressive nine-speed auto transmission is standard, and AWD is an option. Base price hovers around $25,000.

2017 Audi Q7

One of the key components that makes the Q7 so grand is the 12.3-inch Virtual Cockpit customizable instrument cluster. That’s just the start, because the leather, power options and incredible ride quality due to air suspension are outstanding as well. The 2017 Audi Q7 appeals to a wide crowd, but select few will own it due to the $50,000 starting price tag.

Under the hood, either a 252-hp turbo I4 or a 333-hp 3.0-liter supercharged V6 are available, each paired with an eight-speed transmission and Quattro AWD.

2017 Mazda CX-9

Mazda did a great job with the 2017 CX-9, drawing appeal from all sorts of classes. The three-row seating pulls in minivan customers. The high-tech features (available Adaptive Cruise Control and Emergency Braking) appeal to safety-conscious and business people. The handling and pep appeal to anyone who enjoys the ride.

Starting around $33,000, the Mazda CX-9 is breaking into new territory. Its sole engine choice is a 250-hp 2.5-liter turbo engine matched to a six-speed auto gearbox. Either front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive are available.

2017 Porsche Macan

Ooh, a Porsche! The 2017 Macan could easily be considered the best crossover SUV because of the Porsche attitude. Wrapped in unique interior design and elegant excess, the Macan does a great job showcasing German engineering. And surprisingly, the starting price is under $50,000.

As with any Porsche, it’s all about the performance. Under the hood, the standard engine is the 252-hp turbo 4-banger, shared with the Q7. The Macan S has 340 hp and the GTS has 360 ponies, all mated to a seven-speed transmission and a capable all-wheel-drive system.

2017 BMW X1

If you want an entry-level German luxury crossover, there’s no question the BMW X1 is a great choice. Starting at under $35,000, there’s a ton of good things about it. The X1 drives more like a sports sedan than an SUV, with nimble, responsive steering and great suspension dampening. The higher trim levels have excellent options available including navigation, adaptive cruise control, automated emergency braking and a self-parking feature.

The engine you’ll have in the X1 is a 228-hp turbocharged I4 with an eight-speed automatic. You can equip your BMW X1 with AWD or you can stick with the standard front-wheel drive option.
