Re-imaged from the ground up, the new Honda Accord features a lighter, more rigid body structure. A V6 option is no longer available on Honda Accord. Instead drivers get the choice of two all-new high-torque direct-injected and turbocharged engines. There’s also a new two-motor hybrid powertrain.

“We are redefining the Honda Accord for a new generation of buyers by bringing something unexpected that challenges the idea of what a mainstream sedan can be,” said Jeff Conrad, senior VP of the Automobile Division of American Honda Motor Co.

“Even as we advance core values like great driving dynamics, safety performance and efficiency, the distinctive design of this all-new 2018 Honda Accord will help it appeal to both head and heart in equal measure.”

Under the Hood

The 2018 Accord features three advanced new powerplants. Two are direct-injected and turbocharged 4-cylinder engines. The third generation of Honda’s two-motor hybrid powertrain rounds out the list of options.

The new 1.5-liter, 16-valve DOHC direct-injected turbo produces a peak 192 horsepower and 192 lb-ft of torque. Further, in the Sport trim, the 1.5-liter turbo can be mated to a 6-speed manual transmission.

The Accord also features a new 2.0-liter 16-valve DOHC direct-injected turbo paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission – a first for a FWD drive. The new 2.0-liter turbo, sharing much of its design with the race-bred 2017 Civic Type R, produces 252 horsepower and 273 lb-ft of torque. It can also be paired with the 6-speed manual transmission in the Sport trim.

The new hybrid powertrain utilizes a 2.0-liter Atkinson cycle engine paired with Honda-developed electric motors. Further, these are the first drive motors in the world to use magnets containing no heavy rare-earth metals, according to a release from Honda.

American Manufacturing

The new Accord hybrid will once again come out of Honda’s Marysville, Ohio. Previously, Honda produced the hybrid in Japan for a few years.

Along with the hybrid, all variants of the 2018 Honda Accord will be produced at Honda’s Marysville auto plant.

Honda has been investing in the facility with numerous enhancements to further advance quality and efficiency, including the introduction of additional technologies and processes.

The Honda Accord was the first vehicle from a Japanese automaker to be manufactured in America. It has been in continuous production at the Marysville Auto Plant since 1982. Production in the U.S. exceeds 11 million units.

Honda will produce the two turbo engines at their Anna, Ohio engine plant. The CVT transmission will be manufactured by the Russells Point, Ohio plant. The all-new 10-speed transmission will be produced at the company’s plant in Tallapossa, Ga.

Honda recently announced a joint $149 million investment at the Russells Point and Tallapoosa plants. The investment was to enable the production of the new 10AT.
