The Fastest SUVs Will Get Your Family There in a Hurry

Driving fast in an SUV was something that seemed ridiculous 20 years ago. Here we are, in the 21st century, and we’ve cracked the code of moving in a hurry with something large and tall. This list of some of the fastest SUVs proves that these are truly wondrous times we live in.

If you have the need for speed, but want to haul your IKEA purchases with ease, you might want to check out the following models. The list isn’t necessarily in any particular order, because acceleration times will vary on who measures them. You’ll also notice several are super close to each other, and one member of the list hasn’t even been released.

Mercedes-AMG GLE63 S

If you want to transport up to seven people in extreme luxury, and get to where you’re going in a hurry, this might be your best option. This SUV with third row seating has a decent amount of cargo behind the last row, making this ride a pretty versatile vehicle.

Mercedes-AMG uses a twin-turbo 5.5-liter V8 engine, which squeezes out 585 horsepower. You can scoot in a hurry, with a 0-to-60 time of 4.2 seconds. On a track, you can hit 160 mph, which has gotta be scary in such a large vehicle.

BMW X5 M

The Bavarians know how to make fast cars. Even though BMW insists the X5 is an “SAV” (Sport Activity Vehicle) not an a true SUV, we’re counting it for this list.

Thanks to the mighty twin-turbo 4.4-liter V8, you have at your command 567 horsepower. When pressed, the BMW X5M charges from 0 to 60 mph in 4.0 seconds, making it one of the quickest SUVs you can buy right now. BMW electronically limits the top speed to 160 mph.

Jeep Grand Cherokee Trackhawk

If you want speed and utility, plus a brand with plenty of cache, the new Jeep Grand Cherokee Trackhawk could be the ideal solution.

Stuffed under the hood is a supercharged 6.2-liter V8. If that sounds familiar, it’s because the very same engine powers the Dodge Charger and Challenger Hellcat twins. Just like the Dodges, the Trackhawk has 707 horsepower and 645 lb-ft of torque on tap. To keep everything in check, you also get a high-performance cooling system and Brembo brakes. Launch mode helps you take off without spinning the tires too much.

With that setup, you can get moving in a hurry. Jeep says the Trackhawk does 0 to 60 mph in a blistering 3.5 seconds. The SUV doesn’t just accelerate quickly, it also stops in a hurry, going from 60 to 0 in 114 feet. As for the quarter mile, the Trackhawk does it in 11.6 seconds. Its top speed comes in at 180 mph, making it one of the quickest and fastest SUVs.

Tesla Model X P100D

By now, everyone should know that fully electric vehicles provide full torque output at a standstill. That means explosive acceleration, at least in the short run. The Model X P100D is the most potent version of Tesla’s big boy SUV. It packs 588 horsepower, plus a monstrous 920 lb-ft of torque.

With Ludicrous Mode, which is a great way to go fast and drain the battery in a hurry, this SUV dashes from 0 to 60 in 2.9 seconds. Needless to say, that beats out plenty of performance cars, let alone SUVs. One of these set a world record for a production SUV running the quarter mile, doing it in 11.418 seconds at 117.85 mph. Keep in mind not everyone will see those kinds of times, but it shows the potential, if you have the right tires and conditions.

Alfa Romeo Stelvio Quadrifoglio

A potential contender for the fastest production SUV spot, this fiery Italian is something you might want to put on your short list. Alfa Romeo has a solid reputation for making performance vehicles. While the regular Stelvio is potent, the Quadrifoglio is quite simply a stallion.

The twin-turbo 2.9-liter V6 that powers this SUV was developed by Ferrari. Out of so little displacement comes 505 horsepower, making it nothing short of amazing. You can push this SUV to go from 0 to 60 in 3.9 seconds. Top speed comes in at 177 mph, and that’s definitely one of the fastest SUVs.

Porsche Cayenne Turbo

Not to be outdone by everyone else, Porsche has released a new generation of the Cayenne. The Turbo model is significantly faster, thanks to the twin-turbo 4.0-liter V8. Peak output comes in at 550 horsepower and 567 lb-ft of torque.

According to Porsche, the Cayenne Turbo can dash from 0 to 60 in 3.9 seconds. Even better, if you have Performance Start, which is like launch control, the SUV does it in a super-hot 3.7 seconds. Top speed is 177 mph. So it’s definitely in the running for fastest SUV, at least for now.

Lamborghini Urus

Even though this SUV from Lamborghini hasn’t come out yet, we’re already expecting it to be one of the fastest SUVs. Of course, what else would you expect from an Italian brand with such a reputation?

Powering the Urus should be a twin-turbo 4.0-liter V8. Everyone’s anticipating peak output of about 650 horsepower. That’s great, but making it even more compelling is lightweighting. Thanks to extensive use of carbon fiber, the Urus should have a power-to-weight ratio that will make it incredibly fast. Exactly how quick it will dash from 0 to 60 mph is anyone’s guess, as is the top speed. Many are anticipating this SUV to be faster than any production model ever made, and that’s probably a fair guess.

We should find out soon enough, Lamborghini will officially debut the Urus SUV in December. Just in time for Christmas.
