The hype was building. Hundreds of suits in the live audience were bombarded by a seizure-inducing light show and choreographed dancers. A parade of classic Lamborghini models including the LM002 concept from the 80s crossed the stage through the Lamborghini DNA tunnel. And then, technical difficulties stripped the Lamborghini Urus unveiling down to one thing: the car itself.

The World’s First Super SUV

Accompanied by a vivacious crowd’s applause, two Lamborghini Urus SUVs rolled out onto the stage, and the real unveiling began.

It’s a stunning specimen. The front fascia is very clearly Lamborghini, looking much like an Aventador lifted six inches higher. The Lamborghini Urus is a four-door SUV with a roofline that drops dramatically to its steep-angled liftgate. There are short overhangs front and rear as Lamborghini designed the Urus to be able to tackle all types of terrain, including sand dunes which were part of the intro videos.

World’s Fastest SUV

The Lamborghini Urus is a collection of world firsts. It’s the first super sport utility vehicle in the world. It comes powered by the first twin-turbo 4.0-liter engine Lamborghini has used. It produces 650 horsepower, driving its acceleration from 0 to 60 miles per hour in 3.6 seconds, and 0 to 120mph in 12.8 seconds. It’s the first SUV in the world with a top speed of 305km/h, or 190mph – everybody is going to need to update their lists of the fastest SUVs.

It’s also the first time Lamborghini has used an electro-hydraulic torque converter with an 8-speed automatic gearbox. Because four-wheel drive is essential in making the Lamborghini Urus as versatile as possible, a Torsen electric center differential has been implemented. While not demonstrated in the unveiling, a new Tambura cylindrical gear and mode selector gives the driver fingertip control over any terrain.

World’s Largest Factory Tires

The Lamborghini Urus has staggered wheel fitment, but that is nothing new. But its front wheels are 21-inch diameter and the rears are 23-inch diameter, the largest factory tires currently used in the world. Unique Pirelli P-Zero tires wrap the massive wheels, designed specifically for the Lamborghini Urus.

Behind those oversized wheels are the largest brakes you’ll find on an SUV. Carbon ceramic brakes come mounted at all four corners – 440mm front brakes and 370mm rear brakes. The Urus stops from 60mph in just 33.7 meters, or 110 feet.

Long Wheelbase

The reason the Lamborghini Urus has short overhangs for an SUV is due to a longer than average wheelbase. But to make the Lamborghini SUV functional on both track, on-road, and off-road, it comes equipped with four-wheel steering. It makes the Urus handle like a much shorter car.

To make the Urus as nimble and stable as possible, Lamborghini has used, for the first time, adjustable air suspension which can be changed with the flick of a switch. Courtesy of the adjustable airbags, the Urus can handle like a super car despite its increased height and mass.

There’s a lot that’s impressive about the Lamborghini Urus Super SUV. It opens the Lamborghini experience up to families and other social dimensions. However, it wasn’t as clean a start as Lamborghini would’ve hoped for the Urus unveiling. Hopefully the Lamborghini Urus itself isn’t plagued by technical issues like the launch.
