2017 Mazda CX-9

Mazda did a great job with the 2017 CX-9, drawing appeal from all sorts of classes. The three-row seating pulls in minivan customers. Starting around $33,000, the Mazda CX-9 is breaking into new territory. Its sole engine choice is a 250-hp 2.5-liter turbo engine matched to a six-speed auto gearbox. Either front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive are available.

2017 Porsche Macan

Ooh, a Porsche! The 2017 Macan could easily be considered the best crossover SUV because of the Porsche attitude. Wrapped in unique interior design and elegant excess, the Macan does a great job showcasing German engineering. And surprisingly, the starting price is under $50,000.

As with any Porsche, it’s all about the performance. Under the hood, the standard engine is the 252-hp turbo 4-banger, shared with the Q7. The Macan S has 340 hp and the GTS has 360 ponies, all mated to a seven-speed transmission and a capable all-wheel-drive system.

2017 BMW X1

If you want an entry-level German luxury crossover, there’s no question the BMW X1 is a great choice. Starting at under $35,000, there’s a ton of good things about it. The X1 drives more like a sports sedan than an SUV, with nimble, responsive steering and great suspension dampening. The higher trim levels have excellent options available including navigation, adaptive cruise control, automated emergency braking and a self-parking feature.
