The Chevrolet Equinox saw a 36 percent increase in sales in June compared to last year
June Car Sales: Domestics Take a Dip, Foreign Brands See an Up Tick
June car sales were down on the year in the United States, according to reports car manufacturers released for the month.
Market analysts expect overall auto sales to decline about 2 percent in June compared to the same time last year.
Detroit’s car companies posted declines, with GM, Ford and Fiat Chrysler reporting slips from a year earlier. Asian automakers, however, fared better, but with only single-digit growth. European automakers also saw slight gains.
June Car Sales: Big Three
General Motors reported a total of 243,155 automobile sales – retail and commercial – for June in the U.S. That number is down 5 percent from June 2016. However, GM’s crossover sales were up 23 percent. That growth is mainly attributed to the strength of Chevrolet Equinox sales, which were up 36 percent.
Ford Motor Company reported a total of 227,979 automobile sales for June, which is down 5.1 percent compared to the same time last year. However, the Ford Explorer saw a 22.7 percent gain, with 21,304 units being sold. Lincoln sales were also up 11.3 percent for the month. That’s 17 consecutive months of growth for the brand.
Fiat Chrysler North America reported 187,348 total automobiles sales for June. That number is a steep 7 percent drop compared to June 2016. Jeep Grand Cherokee sales, however, were up 21 percent. The SUV posted its best June sales since 2005. And sales of the all-new Chrysler Pacifica minivan were up 59 percent. Viper sales were up 46 percent.
June Car Sales: Asian Automakers
Honda Motor Company reported 139,793 total automobile sales for June in the United States. That number is a .8 percent increase over June 2016. The company’s subcompact SUV Honda HR-V saw sales jump 35.1 percent, the vehicle’s best month to date. The Acura RDX saw a 48.3 percent increase in sales.
Toyota and Lexus combined for a total of 202,376 units sold in the U.S. in June, which is an increase of 2.1 percent over June 2016. RAV4 sales were up 25 percent, and Highlander sales were up 28.3 percent.
Nissan Motor Company sold 143,328 total units in June in the United States, a 2 percent gain over the same time last year. While Juke and Versa posted massive drops, Nissan Titan sales surged from around 900 units last year to nearly 4,200 this June. The Armada was another bright spot for the company. Also, the company’s all-electric Nissan Leaf posted a 37.4 percent gain over last year.
Hyundai sold a total of 54,507 units in June, which is down 19 percent from June 2016. While Elantra sales were down, the Accent and Tucson both posted impressive gains.
Kia Motors moved 56,143 units in the United States in June, which is about a 13 percent drop from June 2016. While Rio sales have suffered dramatically, Forte and Optima both posted more than 10 percent gains over last year.
June Car Sales: European Car Makers
Volkswagen of America sold a total of 27,377 units in June, a 15 percent increase over June 2016. June was the first full-month of sales for the all-new VW Atlas, which has sold over 2,400 units.
BMW brand vehicles were up .4 percent in June, with 28,962 total units being sold. The BMW 5 Series saw a 42.9 percent increase in sales, and the BMW X1 saw a 62.5 percent increase over June 2016.
Mercedes-Benz USA is reporting its best June sales ever, with 28,994 total units sold, an increase of nearly 2 percent.
