Top Movie Cars of 2016

  • Jason Unrau

Another year of films is coming to a close. Along with the top names in Hollywood, there are always automotive stars that take the stage in blockbuster movies. Some make a brief cameo while others experience total and complete destruction in front of the camera lens.

In 2016, we didn’t get a new installment of the Fast and Furious series. Nor did we have any James Bond flicks. Instead, most of the vehicles we saw were a little off the beaten path. Check out these top movie cars of 2016.

Deadpool’s Taxi

Their dialogue in the movie is mostly witty banter by the dubious superhero played by Ryan Reynolds and the naïve Darpinder. Each interaction takes place in the typical taxicab environment, complete with Daffodil Dream air freshener and the driver’s doting images.
The car, coincidentally, is a Crown Vic in taxicab yellow.

Jason Bourne’s Dodge Charger

[imageSource url="http://media.wheelscene.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/01/maxresdefault.jpg" id="5911"]

In the fifth instalment of the Jason Bourne series titled after the main character, Jason Bourne, there’s little doubt you’re going to get a car chase. You’re not disappointed as Matt Damon once again tries to outrun the CIA, led by Tommy Lee Jones.

It’s a lengthy chase that happens on the Las Vegas strip in both the movie and in real life. The late-model Dodge Charger takes several sideswipes, jumps the boulevard, plows through oncoming traffic, and evades the local police cars as well as the CIA’s specialty SUV.

It should go without saying, but folks, don’t try this stuff at home with your Charger.

Top 10 Car News Stories of 2016

  • Jason Unrau

It’s been quite the year. 2016 has been one for the record books in some aspects, while in others, it’s been a year to forget. America voted in a president-elect with awful hair and a scrappy attitude. The internet was broken by memes, cat photos and Kardashian-related stories.

And among all that, there were hits and misses in the automotive world. Let’s focus on those. From recalls and lawsuits to new models and scandals, here are the top 10 car news stories of 2016.

10. Takata Airbag Recalls

[imageSource url="http://media.wheelscene.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/01/iStock-531332934-min.jpg" id="5855"]

All year long, the crisis deepened for Takata, the world’s largest airbag manufacturer. Millions of vehicles have been recalled for defective inflators. Metal shards from the inflators can cause serious injury or death when the airbag deploys, or the airbag can deploy with explosive force. 19 different automakers have vehicles affected by the recalls, and there’s no end in sight.

The NHTSA has said the Takata airbag recall is now "the largest and most complex safety recall in U.S. history." It’s so large that Takata’s financial future is in jeopardy. Mergers have been sought by its rivals, and bankruptcy is even a possibility.

9. Mitsubishi Fuel Ratings Scandal

[imageSource url="http://media.wheelscene.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/01/iStock-459223423-min.jpg" id="5854"]

In 2016, it was discovered that Mitsubishi micro-car fuel ratings were falsified. Actually, the rating process was found to be egregiously inept, resulting in inaccurate ratings. Mitsubishi used arbitrary numbers to calculate fuel economy ratings that proved to be over-rated. On closer inspection, the errors ran back as far as 25 years.

Mitsubishi shares plummeted and the automaker was in dire straits. Nissan bought controlling interest in Mitsubishi, keeping the company afloat. The fuel ratings debacle extends to many models now, with a few in the North American market.

America’s 10 Favorite Vintage Muscle Cars

  • Staff Writer

Have you ever wondered what the favorite vintage vehicles in America are? We wondered too, and tried to find out. We investigated all manner of websites and all manner of car boards trying to determine what Americans want in terms of vintage vehicles. We came up with more than 200 vehicles. So then we had to break it down, and that wasn’t easy.

Everyone has a preference. We found advocates for everything from the various incarnations of the Ford Torino to, believe it or not, the lowly Gremlin. It wasn’t easy assembling this list, but one thing we did discover is that overwhelmingly, the preference is for muscle cars. Accordingly, we’re basing this list on vintage muscle cars, because no other category even came close.

Here we count down the top ten based on what we’ve been able to determine from various sources. These are the cars that are most desired by aficionados of classic cars.

10. Plymouth Roadrunner

[imageSource url="http://media.wheelscene.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/10/Plymouth-Roadrunner.jpg" id="1036"]

The Plymouth Roadrunner was introduced in 1968, and was manufactured for about 12 years. As you might expect, it was marketed with Wile E. Coyote’s image, and the horn featured the Roadrunner’s ubiquitous “Meep Meep.” But don’t let the cuteness fool you. The Roadrunner could go 140 miles an hour and you could order a 426 CDI Hemi rated at 452hp that would allow the car to hit a quarter mile in just thirteen and a half seconds.

9. Buick GSX

[imageSource url="http://media.wheelscene.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/10/Buick-GSX.jpg" id="1030"]

If you grew up in the 1960's, you probably remember the Buick Skylark. It was a popular medium-sized car. The GSX was Buick's very late entry into the Muscle Car market following less than spectacular sales late in the 1969 model year. The GSX was Buick's answer to Pontiac's GTO Judge, Oldsmobile's 4-4-2 W-30, and Plymouth's HemiCuda.

This beauty was actually able to hit a quarter mile in just 13.38 seconds.

World-Famous Car Collections

  • Jason Unrau

Do you have a prized collector’s car tucked away in the garage of your suburban bungalow? Most of us think we’ve made it big when we can finally afford to snag a vehicle simply as a plaything. It usually goes no further – just one collector’s car.

For some who’ve really struck it rich, their car collections include vehicles they probably don’t even recall. From all-original classics to special editions and supercars to ultra-luxury cruisers, their car collections are massive and expensive. Check out these world-famous car collections.

Paul Walker

[imageSource url="http://media.wheelscene.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/12/1995_BMW_M3_Lightweight_front-min.jpg" id="5782"]

Our hats are off to a car buff the world will miss for years to come. Paul Walker co-starred in "The Fast and the Furious" movie series, and that’s where his heart truly was. His car collection was modest but interesting, especially for someone of his young age. And because he loved driving fast cars, that’s what you’ll find in the collection he left behind.

His collection includes the likes of Ford Mustangs, Audis, Porsches and a handful of BMWs. Of those BMWs, there are multiple BMW M3 LTW models, a stripped-out racing version of the car. The movies he starred in featured many tuner Japanese cars, and Paul had one Nissan Skyline R34 GT-R, but not much else from Japan.

Ralph Lauren

[imageSource url="http://media.wheelscene.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/12/1930_Mercedes-Benz_SSK_34_left__1482508178_192.180.193.38.jpg" id="5785"]

When your world revolves around style and class, it’s bound to mingle with cars. Ralph Lauren is a world-class fashion designer that’s often seen dressing the part of James Bond. You probably won’t see him in an Aston Martin, though. He leans toward slightly more exotic and rare vehicles than that.

Ralph Lauren reportedly stores his most precious vehicles in a secret garage. On display in the immaculate facility are models like a $28 million  1938 Bugatti Type 57SC Atlantic Vintage, a 1958 Ferrari 250 and the one-off 1937 Mercedes Benz Count Trossi SSK. Each one is incredibly special and in pristine condition. It makes his McLaren F1 and Bugatti Veyron look like daily drivers. His car collection is reportedly worth $140 million.

The Rainbow Sheikh

[imageSource url="http://media.wheelscene.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/12/rainbowsheikh.jpg" id="5781"]

When you want to amass one of the world’s largest car collections, it helps to be a billionaire. The Rainbow Sheikh is actually Sheikh Hamad Bin Hamdan Al Nahyan and is a member of the ruling family in Abu Dhabi. He loves anything on wheels, and not necessarily just your run-of-the-mill kind of collector cars either.

The term "Rainbow Sheikh" is thanks to his seven Mercedes S-Class cars, each in a different color. He loves larger-than-life offroad trucks like the Dodge Power Wagon and Jeeps of all kinds. He even owns a military-style Jeep that’s several times larger than a real Wrangler.

And if his car collection isn’t impressive enough, his storage facility will take the cake. He’s purchased an ancient pyramid – a pyramid, folks – and keeps his extensive collection inside. Our fact-checker still hasn’t confirmed that detail yet…

Top 10 Trucks You Need For Conquering Anything

  • Jason Unrau

Let's find something to look forward to. Why not look to the booming auto market for a new truck?

Trucks are making a strong resurgence. Full-size pickups and midsize trucks are emerging as the most popular vehicles, and manufacturers are taking full advantage of it. Just look at these top 10 trucks!

Honda Ridgeline

[imageSource url="http://media.wheelscene.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/12/2017_Ridgeline_03-e1481843890936.jpg" id="5661"]

The popular Honda model took a hiatus as it was being redesigned. When it returned in late 2016 as the Honda Ridgeline, it immediately captured hearts. The Ridgeline kept the trademark dual-action tailgate and the in-bed trunk. It maintains its V-6 engine, with all-wheel drive as standard equipment in almost all markets. It’s undoubtedly improved from its previous form, taking on a pickup truck image instead of an SUV-pickup hybrid.

Improvements include the Honda Sensing package with Adaptive Cruise Control, Brake Assist, and Forward Collision Warning. An in-bed power inverter is available, and Intelligent Key with Remote Start and walk-away door locks are standard equipment. Look for the Honda Ridgeline to become a mainstream competitor in the coming months.

Jeep Gladiator

[imageSource url="http://media.wheelscene.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/12/wrangler-truck-e1481844704415.jpg" id="5662"]

With the Wrangler rumors flying for years, it may be a little hard to know what to expect in production before it’s actually announced.

It’s safe to bet there will be a 3.6-liter VVT version, available in both 6-speed manual and automatic trans. And as per Wrangler spec, a two-wheel-drive base model will be available while most Wrangler pickups built will be the common 4WD design.

Top 10 Winter SUVs for Snowy Weather

  • Jason Unrau

If you normally get the white stuff where you live, the first few flakes have probably fallen already. You’ve taken your first drive in the slush and snow, slipping and sliding on the streets among some truly awful drivers. ‘Tis the season…

Maybe it’s time to get into a vehicle that can handle the blustery winter conditions that grip your city for several months every year. If you need a few ideas, you’re in luck. Here's our list of the top 10 winter SUVs to have for driving in snowy conditions SUVs.

Kia Sportage

[imageSource url="http://media.wheelscene.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/11/10920_2017_Sportage_SX_Turbo_AWD-e1480022104127.jpg" id="5277"]

The Kia Sportage is all-new for 2017. It’s sharp and attractive and a great bang for your buck. But more importantly, the Kia Sportage is incredibly capable in the snow. On all Sportage trims, Dynamax All-Wheel Drive, including locking center differential, is available for surefooted trailblazing. Alright, maybe not trailblazing. But definitely great for highway driving in slush and snow.

Dual climate control and heated seats are also available on all Sportage trims. And for all this wintry goodness, expect to pay around $27,385. I’d say that’s good value.

Acura MDX

[imageSource url="http://media.wheelscene.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/11/2017_Acura_MDX___7-1-e1480022458251.jpg" id="5278"]

We’re tipping into the upper echelon of mainstream SUVs here, but the 2017 Acura MDX simply has to make the list. I mean, who doesn’t want to drive a vehicle with 290 horsepower, slaloming through traffic on the freeway despite a fresh dump of snow? Acura’s renowned Super Handling All Wheel Drive is optional, however, which is a bit of a sore spot.

Related Search Topics (Ads)

Heated front seats are standard equipment, as they should be in a luxury SUV. Heated rear seats are available on upper trims too, and even a heated steering wheel. With SH-AWD, the 2017 Acura MDX starts out at $45,950.

Top Compact Cars For Enthusiasts

  • Jason Unrau

Life doesn’t stand still just because you love to drive. Your youthful days driving a two-seater sports car, a classic muscle car, or a tough and rugged pickup truck might be behind you. Or, you might be a young up-and-comer who wants something fun to drive without breaking the bank. Compact cars make perfect sense.

Compact Cars Have Enthusiasts Covered

While it’s not the most elegant of categories, compact cars have come a long way. You’re no longer relegated to puddle-jumper status with boring, uninspired looks. Nay, compact cars have become a great choice for stylin’ and profilin’. And performance-wise, there’s plenty to get you excited – even if you’re a certifiable car nut.

Check out these top compact cars for enthusiasts to see what all the fuss is about. Each one hits a price point between $20,000 and $40,000, so there should be a fun-to-drive compact car here for every budget.

Ford Focus RS & ST

[imageSource url="http://media.wheelscene.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/10/2016-FOCUS-RS_SKV_0946-e1476841876614.jpg" id="4786"]

Ford has given us good reason to get amped up to drive compact cars. Just look at the options they have given us! Their Focus hatchback lineup has the Focus RS on top, with an absolutely mean appearance backed by incredibly aggressive performance. It’s a 6-speed manual transmission mated to a whopping 350-hp 2.3-liter EcoBoost four-banger. Tag on the Ford Performance All-Wheel-Drive System and you’ve got a streetable rally car for just under $36,000.

Related Search Topics (Ads)

Or, you can scale it back a touch with the Focus ST. Looking just slightly tamer than the RS, the Focus ST still has the goods with a 252-hp 2.0-liter EcoBoost engine. You still get a 6-speed rower, but without the all-wheel drive. If you choose the Recaro seat upgrade, you’ll still feel like you’re driving a rally car. Base price hovers around the $22,000 mark.

Kia Forte Koup Turbo

[imageSource url="http://media.wheelscene.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/10/11047_2016_Forte_Koup-1-e1476842059118.jpg" id="4787"]

If a sexy little Asian coupe (or Koup) is more your style in compact cars, you can’t overlook the Kia Forte Koup Turbo. Not only is the Kia Forte Koup sporty on the outside, it’s spacious on the inside so you don’t have to feel guilty about sacrificing family space. One of its distinguishing features is Flexsteer, a switchable steering control with Normal, Comfort, and Sport modes. Enthusiasts will likely just leave it in the more responsive Sport mode. Up front, a 1.6-liter turbocharged engine makes 201 horsepower for an enjoyable driving experience, and you can choose either a 6-speed manual gearbox or a 6-speed auto. Entry-level pricing barely breaches the $20,000 barrier.

If one desires more cargo space and utility, the Forte5 five-door hatch is also available with the 6-speed manual and turbo engine combo. To this five-door turbo manual Kia, you can also add sunroof, leather and all the tech package goodies and it still only rings in at $26,335. Unfortunately, you can't get all those bells and whistles in the 6-speed Koup - only in the auto.

Top 10 Best-Selling Midsize Sedans

  • Jason Unrau

A few years ago, a list of midsize sedans would be a yawner. You probably wouldn’t even read past the headline, because midsize sedans were all one and the same. They were boring, sluggish, and soft in every category that warms a car enthusiast’s heart. One look at the current midsize sedans, and you’ll know – these are a different breed.

Today's Midsize Sedans Offer More

Whether you’re interested in a performance sedan or a family car, today's midsize sedans are anything but bland. Some have available V-6 engines, others lean toward the fuel efficiency end of the spectrum, and a few are competitors in the luxury realm.

Check out the top 10 midsize sedans you should consider, ranked in reverse order of sales.

10th Place - Mazda 6

[imageSource url="http://media.wheelscene.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/10/2016_Mazda6_2-e1476570531431.jpg" id="4745"]

The Mazda brand has had tunnel vision in recent years, and in terms of midsize sedans, that's a good thing. Their focus is on developing fun-to-drive cars, though not necessarily the most powerful. The Mazda 6 slots right into their plans with an acceptable 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine, pushing a modest 184 hp. Their SKYACTIV Vehicle Dynamics with G-Vectoring Control assists you to handle the car like you’re headed to the track. Well, without the high horsepower.

Related Search Topics (Ads)

Where the Mazda 6 stands out in the crowd is the manual rower. Unlike most other brands, Mazda understands that some drivers simply want a manual transmission because they’re more fun to drive. The six-speed manual transmission lets you play around a little more without compromising on the functionality of a family sedan.

9th Place - Subaru Legacy

[imageSource url="http://media.wheelscene.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/10/2._2016_Legacy_2.5i_Premium-e1476571246688.jpg" id="4746"]

The Subaru brand is thought to be a niche brand, but mistakenly so. Take a look at the Legacy, and you’ll have a hard time figuring out why it doesn’t sell better. The Subaru Legacy is stuffed with high-tech convenience options like Push Button Start, STARLINK Multimedia, and the full complement of power features. And it’s another performance-based sedan, with very capable 4-cylinder and 6-cylinder boxer engine choices (just like Porsche!) for up to 256 horsepower.

While safety is a highlight, the feature that stands out on the Subaru Legacy is the Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive system as standard equipment. The only time you’ll lose traction is when you burn off the tires.

8th Place – Volkswagen Passat

[imageSource url="http://media.wheelscene.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/10/2017_passat_r-line_6414-e1476571791102.jpg" id="4747"]

This German brand has been under fire for a while now, but there are plenty of good things to come from its stable. The Passat, for example, is among the top 10 best-selling midsize sedans. Engineered for safety and designed for comfort, the Passat is incredibly well-built. Even the base model has the power features most drivers want.

What makes the Passat special is the top-of-the-line V-6 models. When you get behind the wheel of the V-6 Passat, you’re in for a treat… a 280-hp treat. Das auto is fast.

Ten Amazing Cars From The Chantilly Concours

  • Jason Unrau

A "concours d’elegance," meaning a competition of elegance, is a French idea that was the basis for today's prestigious car shows. It began in the 17th Century with a Parisian parade of aristocrats' horse-drawn carriages. Today's concours d’elegance events have evolved into glamorous exhibitions of classic cars, supercars and ultra-luxurious vehicles. Now in only its third year, the Chantilly Concours d’Elegance draws some of the most innovative new concepts along with the most elite cars from all over the world.

Chantilly Concours - More Than Just Cars

Hosted at Chateau de Chantilly, the event features more than just cars. There’s a Concours d’Etat, with stylish cars from all over the world. The host location is a premier location for art as it is home to countless masterpieces and manuscripts. High-end fashion designers pair up with manufacturers, making this Concours event the most “haute couture” of them all.

The 2016 Chantilly Concours d’Elegance was held on September 4th. A total of 850 vehicles were entered in the show. Judges had to select just a few that stood out about the rest.
Check out these 10 incredible automotive specimens from the show:

Lamborghini Miura P400

Celebrating its 50th anniversary, the Lamborghini Miura P400 was prominently featured at the Chantilly Concours. At the time of its release in 1966, the Miura was the fastest known production car. P400 describes the powertrain: "Posteriore 4-liter." It’s a V-12 engine that produces 350 horsepower, transversely mounted behind the driver and cast as one piece with the gearbox.
It’s widely accepted that the Lamborghini Miura began the trend of mid-engine two-seater sports cars, and its sexy, sleek appearance is still gorgeous by today’s standards.

One of the most badass and powerful cars on the road is the Challenger, and it comes in a range of models from the poser’s V-6 to the monstrous SRT Hellcat with 707 horsepower. Alas, $50K won’t get you a Hellcat, but it will get you the Challenger R/T Scat Pack. It has the 6.4-liter Hemi V-8, good enough for 485 horsepower from 392 cubic inches. You’ll scoot to 60 miles per hour from a standstill in just 4.3 seconds. Choose either the 6-speed manual or the Torqueflite 8-speed auto for a fun ride. It comes in at $38,995 with the manual transmission.
