5 New Trucks of 2016

  • Jason Unrau

Every year sees changes in the automotive industry and the truck world is no different. New models are released, new features are added, and facelifts revitalize and update looks.

Several trucks made a splash for 2016, from minor adjustments to major changes and all-new releases.

2016 Nissan Titan XD

[imageSource url="http://media.wheelscene.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/02/Nissan-Titan-XD.jpg" id="1820"]

Perhaps the hottest new truck that has been released in recent years, the Nissan Titan XD is stronger, tougher, more aggressive and way more attractive than its outgoing model. The Titan XD is built up on a 2500 platform, classifying it as a ¾ ton truck but appealing to the ½ ton market as well.

The biggest news is the 5.0-liter Cummins V8 under the hood, producing 310 horsepower and a monstrous 555 lb-ft of torque. The interior is completely new and introduces some of the finer things in life including gorgeous leather with detailed stitching, NissanConnect functions integrated into a powerful Rockford Fosgate sound system, and front and rear sonar systems to assist with parking. The 2016 Nissan Titan XD is supremely capable with 12,300lb tow capacity and an integrated gooseneck hitch in the truck bed.

Look for the 2017 Nissan Titan half-ton to arrive late in the 2016 calendar year as well.

2016 GMC Canyon Diesel

[imageSource url="http://media.wheelscene.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/02/GMC-Canyon-Diesel.jpg" id="1817"]

The mid-size truck market is heating up again with the addition of an all-new diesel engine for the 2016 GMC Canyon. Specifically developed for the smaller truck market, the 2.8-liter Duramax diesel engine has been planned for the Canyon all along. The turbodiesel four-cylinder produces 181 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque, enough for it to be capable of towing up to 7,700lb when properly equipped. The all-new Duramax diesel engine is the cleanest-burning diesel engine from GM to date with advanced EGR cooling technology. This helps it get better gas mileage than the Canyon’s own V6 gas engine.

The GMC Canyon Diesel is also bio-diesel capable and is an attractive option for only $4,000 more on the sticker price. Other notable changes are an exhaust brake integration and an integrated trailer brake controller.

7 Obscure Old American Muscle Cars

  • Steven Symes

There's nothing quite like old American muscle. The beautiful simplicity in styling, raw power and rumbling exhausts simply cannot be recreated today, as much as automakers are trying these days. Sure, modern muscle cars are fun and all, but they're just different.

If you're like a lot of people, you're a big fan of old American muscle cars. While pretty much everyone knows about the Mustang, Camaro, Challenger, Charger, 'Cuda, etc. there were plenty of other muscle cars you might not have ever heard about. See how many of the following are new to you.

But if you want something a little more mainstream, and recent, here's a list of some of the best muscle cars of the 80s.

1. DeTomaso Pantera

[imageSource url="http://media.wheelscene.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/02/DeTomaso-Pantera.jpg" id="1708"]

Okay, so this is an Italian car, and yet this list is about American muscle cars, but let me explain the rationale here. Wedged behind the seats is a fire breathing Ford 351 Cleveland V-8, so it has a heart of pure American muscle. That midengine layout also helps the Pantera handle like a champion, which is really something since so many other options on this list weren't exactly tight handling machines.

Back in the 1970s the Pantera was a hot car in more ways than one. Quite a few celebrities owned them, but some design flaws meant they had the propensity to overheat, a lot. The early models really weren't rust proofed, so owners had to battle that problem. Oh, and the safety cage was pretty much nonexistent, making crashing one not recommended. But just firing up that V-8 engine was enough to put smiles on a lot of faces.

Even a lot of people who've heard of the Pantera have no idea that production ran all the way until 1991, 20 years after the first one rolled off the production line. Just over 7,000 units were made, which is why the car is pretty rare.

2. Studebaker Golden Hawk

[imageSource url="http://media.wheelscene.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/02/Studebaker-Golden-Hawk.jpg" id="1711"]

Even though Studebaker was circling the drain as a brand, it gave drivers one last great vehicle with the Golden Hawk. The model was a little early on the muscle car scene, but it was billed as a more comfortable performance option than the Corvette and Thunderbird.

Related Search Topics (Ads)

Crammed under the hood was a 352 cubic inch V-8 engine, which belted out 275 horsepower. That doesn't sound like much today, but it was impressive back in 1956. Enthusiasts took to the Golden Hawk back in its day, but with the march of time it's been largely forgotten today.

5 Care Tips for Luxury Cars

  • Jason Unrau

Congratulations on your luxury vehicle ownership! It might be your first one, stepping up in the world, or it may be just the most recent acquisition of several that you currently own. Either way, owning luxury cars is an exciting proposition but it doesn’t come without hazards.

Let’s face it, if you drive a high-end vehicle like Land Rover, Porsche, Ferrari, or Lamborghini (among many others) you’re going to draw attention when you drive your car in the regular situations. Unless you’re driving in Dubai or on Ocean Drive in Miami Beach, a luxury car brand is going to be the focus of many stares.

So don’t you want it to look pristine? Don’t you want it to work at its peak performance? Here are five ways to best care for your luxury car, for your sake and the sake of others.

Protect Your Vehicle's Condition

[imageSource url="http://media.wheelscene.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/01/Protect-Your-Vehicles-Condition.jpg" id="1661"]

What this doesn’t mean is being the pompous jerk who takes up three parking spots so nobody parks their vehicle close enough to ding it. That doesn’t protect your car – people go out of their way to scratch or ding ‘those guys’. What that means is to be mindful of what the environment does to your car.

Related Search Topics (Ads)

The UV rays from the sun can and will cause extensive damage to your car whether it is a $1,000 Toyota clunker or a $500,000 Lamborghini supercar. It beats down on your paint, your exterior trim, your tires, and your interior components and degrades them. If you’ve seen cracking on dash or door panels, that’s from exposure to the sun’s UV rays. Same with faded paint, whitish-looking plastic exterior panels, and weather cracks on tires.

Park your vehicle in a garage wherever possible, out of the direct sunlight. Use a car cover if your car is going to be sitting for any length of time longer than a few days. This will protect your car’s exterior finish and interior plastics from degrading due to the sun’s powerful effects. Just don’t be the guy who uses a car cover when they head into the office for a few hours. Nobody likes that guy.

Perform Your Scheduled Oil Change

[imageSource url="http://media.wheelscene.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/01/Perform-Your-Scheduled-Oil-Change.jpg" id="1660"]

This sounds like one of the most basic, useless tips, but in fact is an area luxury car owners fall down regularly. Luxury car manufacturers use top quality components and fluids so your vehicle won’t need to be maintained as often. For example, fully-synthetic oil is used in many Porsche models including the 911 GT3 and only needs to be changed every 2 years or 15,000 miles.

The problem is that more often than not luxury cars are driven far less than the average vehicle. If you only drive 5,000 miles per year, you may think you can get away with changing your engine oil every third year. Don’t fall into this temptation!

Your engine oil degrades whether you drive the car or not. Moisture forms in the crankcase. You need to get the contaminants out of your engine so they don’t cause lasting damage. Err on the side of caution and get your oil change (expensive as it may be) performed at or before your service interval.

Top Movie Cars of 2015

  • Jason Unrau

The year 2015 was massive for the box office, with monstrous movie releases like Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Jurassic World, Furious 7, The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part II, and the latest double-oh-seven film, Spectre. Just over $11 billion—yes, billion—was spent on this single form of visual entertainment and the trend appears that the industry is growing quickly.

It’s no wonder that the cars used in movies are becoming a feature unto themselves. Movie makers aren’t just finding the cheapest options when it comes to cars they use in their flicks, even if the cars are going to be completely destroyed. In fact, there are several movies just this year that have had cars manufactured just for their movie, and nothing else.

Other films feature specific brands that give a strong impression that advertising dollars have been thrown around. Take the BMW presence in Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation for instance. Just a bit of a Bimmer plug, don’t you say?

Feast your eyes on the top movie cars of 2015, in no particular order:

Aston Martin DB10 – Spectre

Barely breaking half the sales of Furious 7, 2015’s offering of James Bond is far from the top earner in the past year. The car, however, is a different story. Aston Martin was commissioned to build 10 bespoke cars known as the DB10 with their 4.7-liter engine and 6-speed manual transmission. Aston Martin took it as a marketing opportunity, stating that the DB10 gives Spectre viewers a glimpse into future developments from Aston Martin. Eight of the cars were used in movie production and two were used for promotional purposes, meaning there are at least a couple out there that aren’t destroyed.

Interceptor – Mad Max: Fury Road

[imageSource url="http://media.wheelscene.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/01/Interceptor.jpg" id="1597"]

In the latest installment of the apocalyptic films, car designs are functional killing machines adapted for use in the sand and dunes. Any one of the movie cars could have made the cut but, this time, it’s the Interceptor. It’s a throwback to the original Mad Max movie as well, with the xb Falcon running wild, offroad in the desert. The car itself is pieced together in appearance. In actual fact, it was built from Falcon parts completely! The car build began in 2003 but halted a couple of times due to production delays. It took nearly a decade before three Interceptors were born for Mad Max: Fury Road.

7 Vehicle Technologies We Owe to Motorsports

  • Steven Symes

If you love cars but don't think much of motorsports, you really should reconsider. Many people aren't aware that quite a few technologies they enjoy on a regular basis while driving actually came straight from racing.

Back in the day, some people subscribed to the philosophy that winning a race on a Sunday would lead to more sales for the manufacturer on Monday. Is that still true? Kind of, but that's not the point. We all owe a debt of gratitude to motorsports of all kinds, because without them cars just wouldn't be the same.

Without further delay, here's the list of technologies.

VTEC

[imageSource url="http://media.wheelscene.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/01/VTECH.jpg" id="1559"]

While some make fun of the "VTEC just kicked in" thing, this technology is actually handy (but it doesn't act like a turbo). Back in the middle of the 1980s, Honda's motorsports arm needed a way to broaden the torque curve on its Formula One cars. The variable valve timing and lift electronic control (VTEC) was created as a direct result.

Really, the biggest benefit of VTEC doesn't have to do with some surge in torque output and especially not with more horsepower. Instead, it's boosted the fuel economy for Hondas and helped keep emissions down.

Push-Button Ignitions

[imageSource url="http://media.wheelscene.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/01/Push-Button-Ignitions.jpg" id="1556"]

Just about every new car these days can be outfitted with a button you push to fire up the engine. While some have questioned the value of such a feature, the fact is it comes directly from the world of motorsports. Every second, every tenth of a second, counts in a race. Automakers have been trying all sorts of time savers for drivers. Porsche used to place the ignition on the left side of the steering column, allowing racers to shift into first gear while starting the engine.

Related Search Topics (Ads)

As technology progressed, push-button ignitions started to become popular in racing circuits. After all, pushing a button is even faster than turning a key. Somewhere along the way, automakers got the idea to add this "sporty" feature to performance-oriented vehicles. It turned out that a lot of average consumers liked the idea, hence why it's so common these days.

6 Reasons Why You Should Buy a Used Luxury Vehicle

  • Steven Symes

They say buying a used luxury car is one of the worst life decisions a person could ever make. But there are a lot of good benefits of owning a luxury car.

While there are pitfalls, they don't overshadow the benefits of buying a used luxury car. You can get a recognized brand name luxury vehicle that is full of features, and save yourself the massive depreciation that luxury cars face. Maintenance is key when extending the life of your luxury vehicle, if you let these items slip you can face some big bills in the service department. Make sure to properly maintain your used luxury vehicle for a luxury experience without the price tag.

Bargain Pricing

[imageSource url="http://media.wheelscene.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/12/Bargain-Pricing.jpg" id="1482"]

This depends on the brand and model, but quite a few luxury cars see a dramatic decrease in value within the first one to three years. If you can take advantage of the person who ate the car's deflation, what you get is a tremendous vehicle at a deep discount.

Most car shoppers have no idea just how dramatic of a drop luxury vehicle prices often take. Quite a few times they're big enough to make the luxury models about as cheap as an equivalent used mainstream vehicle. Of course, some are suspicious of this "deal" because they believe there's some sort of catch. It's that kind of skepticism that helps fuel this trend, so maybe it's best to not complain. When buying a used luxury vehicle, one of the biggest benefits of owning a luxury car is knowing you saved the massive depreciation the first owner experienced.

Once that initial financial hit has been taken by a luxury car, they typically hold what's left of their value fairly well. That means you won't see your money fly away as fast as if you were to go with a new mainstream vehicle such as a Mazda3. It's counter-intuitive that you can save money by purchasing a luxury item, but in this case that's the truth.

Solid Craftsmanship

[imageSource url="http://media.wheelscene.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/12/Solid-Craftsmanship.jpg" id="1485"]

Even at several years old, a pre-owned luxury car has far better craftsmanship than a brand new mainstream vehicle. You can feel it in the seats, with softer leather, a higher-quality pad and fine stitching. The doors feel more substantial, the switchgear isn't flimsy and even the different components under the hood are just made better.

Related Search Topics (Ads)

In some sad cases this doesn't hold true, especially when luxury brands owned by larger mainstream automakers dip into the shared parts bin. That's something to keep in mind. But more often than not luxury cars have better interior sound proofing, thicker windows, smaller gaps between components, softer interior surfaces and other niceties that make owning them more of a joy.

8 Great Christmas Gifts for Car Lovers

  • Jason Unrau

So we’ve come to that time of year again when the malls are overflowing with people scrambling to find the right gift for their loved ones. Parking lots are packed and traffic near the malls is insane. Christmas Cheer goes straight out the window when you try to battle the crowds for stocking stuffers on the bare shelves, and you don’t even know if the gift recipient will even like it.

Ah, yes, the holidays. It gives you a warm and fuzzy feeling, doesn’t it? Wouldn’t it be great to know what you’re looking for BEFORE you hit the mall craziness?

If you’re shopping for a car lover this holiday season, chances are that you can leave the traffic, parking, and frustrated mall shopping to the other crazies. Specialty shopping can often be done in the comfort of your home – sitting on the couch with a glass of adult eggnog, say – and your purchases can be delivered right to your door.

Internet shopping has become mainstream nowadays and is the ideal spot to find the perfect gift for the car lover on your list. Here are some ideas:

Dashcam

[imageSource url="http://media.wheelscene.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/12/Dashcam.jpg" id="1294"]

If you haven’t spent hours online watching Russian dashcam vids, or the person you are buying for hasn’t shown you clips of the car blunders, this may not be the right buy for you. For the other 99 percent, a dashcam is a brilliant idea. Dashcams capture the nonsense that occurs daily when driving, whether on the highway or on a city commute. The absolutely moronic acts that you’ve undoubtedly seen can be recorded on an inexpensive device like a GoPro to either show off to your friends or to provide to the authorities as evidence. But mostly to show your friends.

Code Reader

[imageSource url="http://media.wheelscene.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/12/Code-Reader.jpg" id="1293"]

The car lover you are buying for can often be missing in action for hours on end. When the first place you look for them is in the garage under the hood of the car, you know they are serious about cars. Make diagnosing car problems easier with a code reader. It’s a small, handheld device that can be picked up in any auto parts store and plugs into the OBDII connector under the dash. When there is a Check Engine light on, an ABS problem, or some other diagnostic test needs to be performed, this little miracle device can save huge amounts of time and money. A basic code reader will cost less than an hour’s worth of diagnosis at a repair shop.

7 Benefits of Having A Pickup Truck

  • Steven Symes

When shopping for new vehicles, some people wonder about the reasons to buy a pickup truck and the benefits of having a pickup truck. That's understandable, because trucks promise loads of power, capability and convenience. For whatever set of reasons, some prospective truck owners might ultimately choose to go with a crossover, SUV, car or even a minivan, afterward suffering from buyer's remorse. So if you are asking yourself, should I buy a truck? Here are some benefits to owning a truck.

The fact of the matter is you should get that pickup you always wanted. There are many great benefits of having a pickup truck, including some you might not have ever considered.

Read on to learn what you've been missing out on, then go get the best pickup truck you can find. There are lots of reasons to buy a pickup truck:

Hauling and Towing

[imageSource url="http://media.wheelscene.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/11/buy-a-truck01.jpg" id="1189"]

Most people think of hauling and towing things first when they consider getting a truck. And it's true, it's one of the best reasons to buy a pickup truck. After all, being able to throw a lot of stuff in the back or haul a heavy trailer is actually pretty handy. You can transport all your stuff and not have to bug someone else for help or rent a truck. It's one of the defining arguments in the truck vs SUV debate.

While it's great to own a vehicle that can haul around a tank on a trailer, remember that you might not need the kind of power that the heavy duty models boast. After all, a Ram 1500 will be capable enough to take on your average landscaping or remodeling job.

Getting Through Tough Situations

[imageSource url="http://media.wheelscene.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/11/buy-a-truck02.jpg" id="1190"]

Believe it or not, there are some people who purposely buy a pickup truck without four-wheel drive. While this will be one of the trucks with best gas mileage, these individuals miss out on one of the greatest benefits of having a truck: their ability to pull through some pretty tough situations.

Related Search Topics (Ads)

Most trucks are well-equipped for driving in the snow. All you need to do is turn on the four-wheel drive and you can take on snow packed roads, deeply rutted dirt trails, rocks, you name it. With all of that newfound ability, you'll find yourself enjoying getting out more, playing in the wilderness and soaking in life on a grander scale. Also, trucks are great vehicles to take camping, not only because you can get to some pretty remote areas, but they make it easy to haul along your gear and you can sleep in the bed for extra security or comfort.

Cheap, Worthwhile Muscle Cars

  • Steven Symes

Not everyone can afford a Ferrari or other desirable exotics, not just the cost of purchasing one but also the steep prices for parts and service. That means those who have more modest financial means but still crave power and speed have a wonderful ally: the muscle car.

The only problem is that lately, some collectors with deep pockets have driven up the price of certain older muscle cars, making them almost as ridiculous as that Ferrari. Fortunately the common man can still find some wonderful muscle cars at reasonable prices. Admittedly, there are some cheap muscle cars out there that offer about as much fun behind the wheel as a Toyota Camry, so low price alone doesn't make it a good option.

That being said, any of the following muscle cars serve up plenty of performance without putting you in the poor house. And if you're looking for something with a little more vintage flair, check out these 80s muscle cars.

Ford Mustang GT

[imageSource url="http://media.wheelscene.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/11/Ford-Mustang-GT.jpg" id="1144"]

For the price some people pay to get an underpowered, sloppy-handling crossover with slightly more cargo than a sedan, you can own this bad boy. The 2016 Mustang GT's 5.0-liter V-8 engine is a true beast, billowing out 435 horsepower and 400 lb.-ft. of torque, which is more than enough to burn some serious rubber. Even better, you get to row the gears with the standard 6-speed manual transmission.

Ford finally got the message that while a solid rear axle can be great for cars that never leave the drag strip, it doesn't exactly make for great handling through turns or much comfort (because other people will ride in your car and judge it by more than how much twisting force the engine produces – weird, I know). According to Ford, the new independent rear suspension doubles the car's anti-squat ability and combats lift ten times more than before.

Chevrolet Camaro SS

[imageSource url="http://media.wheelscene.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/11/Chevrolet-Camaro-SS.jpg" id="1141"]

The sixth generation of Chevy's perennial muscle car will also be relatively affordable, once it arrives at dealers. The SS will also be the most powerful ever produced, thanks to the LT1 V-8 engine and its wonderful 455 horsepower, plus 455 lb.-ft. of torque.

Related Search Topics (Ads)

Like the Mustang, the new Camaro will be loaded with aluminum and other materials to shed weight. That means it handles better and accelerates faster. What more could you want?

One of the most epic rivalries in the automotive world is between the Camaro and Mustang, and drivers are the ultimate winners. No matter which muscle car you go with, you'll enjoy loads of tire-shredding joy, mixed with modern technologies that amazingly don't detract from the fun.

6 Reasons Why Dieselgate Could Benefit a Car Buyer

  • Jason Unrau

By now, the whole world over has heard about Volkswagen’s woes. The iconic German car maker has been integrating software into its diesel engine-equipped cars and SUV’s that detects when it is undergoing an emissions test so it can modify its operation to fool the testing equipment. The end result is up to 40 times the legal limit of air pollution leaving the tailpipes of millions of diesel Volkswagens.

This isn’t going to be just a slap on the wrist for Volkswagen. It’s estimated that there will be billions of dollars in fines from the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) that will put a tangible damper on VW’s ability to operate. The top executives and other participants who knowingly implemented the illegal software defeat will probably be prosecuted criminally. And they’ve already suffered a stinging blow to their reputation which will affect the purchasing decisions of countless car buyers.

The most recent development has now landed Volkswagen’s sister companies, Audi and Porsche, in the same hot soup. Previously only the 2010 Car of the Year, the Audi A3 TDI with a 2.0-liter clean diesel engine, was part of the debacle. Now, 3.0-liter diesel engines that produce up to nine times the legal limit of nitrous oxide emissions are added to the list. That includes:

  • 2015 Porsche Cayenne
  • 2016 Audi A7 AND A8 Quattro
  • 2016 Audi Q5
  • 2014 Volkswagen Touareg

That’s really bad news for an automaker that was hoping their ill-advised acts would slowly disappear from the headlines. Just when the Dieselgate issue was settling down and cooling off on the back burner, a new batch of vehicles pulls them right back into the fire.

How Does This Benefit the Buyer?

What is a terrible (though self-inflicted) situation for Volkswagen could ultimately be of significant benefit to someone in the market for a new or used car.

Dependable Cars

Volkswagen has always had a brilliant history of building dependable, long-lasting cars and though the future is grim with Dieselgate hanging over them, their vehicles are just as reliable as they were before. Their engines are still efficient and solid, and last forever. Their transmissions are still as dependable as they always have been. The interior gadgetry is still innovative and their cars are well-appointed. Their vehicle designs are still aerodynamic and attractive. Volkswagen cars are still among the best-built cars on the road.

Blowout Prices

Volkswagen prices have plummeted. Dealerships are reeling from the announcement that they have to hold all diesel stock until further notice, or at least until a repair is released for the software defeat. Not only are they saddled with cars they can’t sell, but they don’t have customers coming through the doors. The population of Volkswagen buyers as a whole have turned their backs on the dealers that sell the brand and have exchanged their pride in the German cars for disdain. The only recourse VW dealers have right now is to drop their prices to blow out the cars they are able to sell.
