9 of the Best Sport Touring Motorcycles on the Road

  • Jason Unrau

There aren’t many people who want a bike just for the track, and there aren’t many people who only enjoy driving a La-Z-Boy down the highway. If you’re like most people who have a motorcycle permit, you want a bike that can do a bit of everything. And that's what the best sport touring motorcycles can do.

The definition is a little loose for these types of motorcycles, but sport touring motorcycles can be a combination of crotch rocket and cruiser motorcycles, a mix of classic and sport, or virtually any other combination.

But what we do know is there are some bikes that do it better than others. And on that note, here are nine of the best sport touring motorcycles out this year.

Triumph Sprint GT

It looks like it would fit right in as a new design about 20 years ago, but that’s no reason to discount the 2017 Triumph Sprint GT. It is obviously built as a touring bike with the three-box pannier system and heated handgrips. Its gel seat is comfortable for the long haul or in city traffic.

But the Triumph Sprint GT has heart too. Its 1050cc three-cylinder with 128 horsepower is punchy and extremely fun to ride, even if the seating position is a little more upright than you’d want on the sport side of things.

Honda VFR800

[imageSource url="https://media.wheelscene.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/10/interceptor.jpg" id="11078" class="right"]

The seventh generation of the Honda VFR800 (also known as the Interceptor) swings toward sport more heavily than touring. The 782cc engine makes 104 horsepower, which is plenty for someone who isn't trying to beat the fastest motorcycle 0 to 60 times. You sit more forward than upright, although not so much that you’re cramping up all the time.

Related Search Topics (Ads)

Let’s not forget the touring side also. The Honda VFR800f uses VTEC technology and gets real-life fuel economy of about 42 mpg. And for true touring enthusiasts, the available hard-sided saddlebags are a must.

New Lineup of Volvo SUVs and Wagons Come in All Shapes and Sizes

  • Steven Symes

If you haven't been paying attention, the company has a pretty solid Volvo SUV and wagon lineup. The Swedish automaker is serious about making over everything. Gone are boxy shapes and low-rent interior treatments.

Instead, Volvos now look sleeker and more athletic. Their cabins have a premium feel, but still with that Scandinavian minimalist design element. What's more, modern Volvos are powerful, but they sip fuel. Yes, it's a compelling set of offerings you should become familiar with. And no matter what you're looking for, there's probably a Volvo SUV or wagon for you.

XC90

This was the Volvo SUV that kicked off the new era. Before the second generation broke cover, most people didn't take the talk of transformation seriously. Aside from the silky exterior, the Volvo XC90 interior has a panache you're hard pressed to find in many Teutonic rivals. One of the warmest details is open-grain North American walnut veneers.

To show how serious Volvo is about quality, it uses a book-matched cutting process. An artisan cuts two veneers out of the same piece of wood, resulting in a symmetrical pattern. It's the same method furniture artisans use for expensive custom pieces.

Volvo found a way to make the interior more spacious, without increasing the XC90's footprint. Things like slimmer front seats mean passengers in the second and third rows won't feel nearly as crushed as before. Just remember, it's an SUV with third row seating, but this isn't a Suburban.

The interior is nice, but this thing moves well enough, depending on the powertrain selected. T5 models have a turbocharged and direct-injected four-cylinder engine, which puts out a decent 250 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque. The T6 adds a supercharger into the mix, boosting things to 316 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque.

If you go for the T8 models, you get a plug-in hybrid powertrain. That means running errands around town only using electricity, no gas.

V90

[imageSource url="https://media.wheelscene.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/10/v90crosscountry.jpg" id="11009" class="right"]

Volvo offers its biggest wagon in two different forms. The regular V90 is elegant and sleek. Getting one in North America takes a little determination.

Related Search Topics (Ads)

The version promoted here is the V90 Cross Country. It features a higher ride height and bigger wheels, so you can pretend you like to be really active off the pavement. Just don't try to take this wagon off-roading, because that won't end well.

The interior closely matches what you get with the XC90, which definitely isn't a bad thing. Of course, there's only seating for five, on two rows. But you enjoy a spacious cargo area in the rear, perfect for Costco runs.

When it comes to powertrains, you get the T5 and T6 options, but no T8.

The Best Cars for Winter Aren’t All About Safety, There’s Savings and Fun

  • Evan Williams

We're not talking about massive trucks or versatile SUVs right now. Sometimes those vehicles are out of drivers' budgets. But with winter right around the corner, some drivers are looking for the best winter cars that are also affordable. And maybe fun.

Winter comes with lots of challenges, like driving in the snow. But if you've got the right car, it doesn't have to be such a nightmare. So here are some of the cheapest best winter cars out there right now.

Of course, if money really is an issue, putting a set of quality winter tires on the car you already have would probably be the cheapest route.

Volkswagen Golf Alltrack

The Alltrack is a lifted Golf wagon. It has a 1.8-liter turbo four that makes 170 horsepower. It's an inch higher for more snow-ready ground clearance. It has VW's 4Motion all-wheel drive. And it's full of cool off-road modes that tell you how high you are, what the steering wheel angle is, and there are a few terrain options too.

It even has hill descent to help you get down an icy driveway. And when you want to have some fun, the all-wheel-drive system is happy to send lots of power to the rear.

Toyota Yaris

[imageSource url="https://media.wheelscene.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/10/toyotayaris.jpg" id="10742" class="right"]

The 2018 Toyota Yaris and Yaris iA are great choices for winter. They're small and light. Tiny 15-inch wheels and 175 wide tires (185s in 16-inch for the iA) mean that winter tires are cheap. Plus that narrow width means that the tires dig down through the snow, giving you better traction.

Related Search Topics (Ads)

Plus the light weight of the cars means that if you do end up in a snow bank, it'll be easier to push out. Go for the Yaris for extra cargo space - maybe keep an emergency kit back there - or the iA for better handling. After all, the iA is a Mazda 2 in disguise.

Classing Up the Joint with the 10 Top Luxury Sedans for 2018

  • Jason Unrau

Not many of us ever get to own the top luxury sedans in the world. It’s a perk that only the crème de la crème get to experience. But although we won’t be parking a quarter-million-dollar car in our garages, the appreciation for fine machinery still runs deep. If nothing else, we love to at least be able to identify the difference between a Bentley and a Rolls-Royce when one drives past while vacationing on South Beach.

The top luxury sedans for 2018 have been trickling out, and they are nothing short of astounding. If you don’t have to wipe drool from the corner of your mouth, are you really a gearhead? We’ve compiled a list of the best luxury cars for 2018 to dream about. Enjoy!

2018 Tesla Model S

It’s safe to say electric cars are no longer the future but the present. The 2018 Tesla Model S is essentially the same car as the 2017 model year but with a few small changes. First, it’s more mainstream than ever, and thanks to Tesla, electric car technology is rocketing ahead. Secondly, the Tesla Model S is getting more luxurious at its entry level.

Tesla just announced that the entry-level 2018 Tesla Model S P75D is to be discontinued. It will be the Model S P85D to get you started, and that’s a lot to handle.

As luxury sedans go, the 2018 Tesla Model S is a non-traditional take on elegance. Its appearance is sporty and futuristic and the interior follows suit. It’s a luxury sedan on the premise that it’s built with precise attention to detail and exceptional performance. Premium leather seating is standard along with all the power amenities you could want. The massive screen in the center console is as large as a television, and self-driving features are just a step away. You won’t find better performance in a car of this size, style or price peeling pavement with acceleration of 3.2 seconds zero to 60.

2018 Audi S8

[imageSource url="https://media.wheelscene.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/09/audi-s8.jpg" id="10680" class="right"]

So, maybe you want something more business class that still performs incredibly well? It sounds like you need the 2018 Audi S8. When the Audi S8 pulls up to the door, it looks like a slick luxury sedan that might have a chauffeur open the door for a hotshot in the backseat. But like all great luxury cars, you’re more likely to want to drive it than just relax in the back.

Related Search Topics (Ads)

The 2018 Audi S8 is such an animal. The sport luxury exterior is astounding on its own, but under the hood is the real beast. It’s a 4.0-liter TFSI V8 that’s been turbocharged for 605 horsepower. With its advanced Quattro all-wheel-drive system, you’ll need only 3.7 seconds to reach 60 miles per hour.

On the inside, the Audi S8 is just as impressive. With Audi connect, a 4G LTE wi-fi hotspot, head-up display, navigation, LED lighting, carbon fiber accents, and premium leather interior upholstery, you’ll find the 2018 Audi S8 as comfortable as it is fun to drive.

The 7 Best Used Motorcycles for a Two-Wheeled Tight Budget

  • Jason Unrau

Between the costs of insurance, a helmet, motorcycle jacket and the rest of the gear you need, getting a motorcycle is an expensive endeavor. It’s totally understandable if you're looking for some of the best used motorcycles.

While a new motorcycle is the ideal situation, there are some good used motorcycles out there. Before you just jump into it and buy the first bike you see on Craigslist, you’ll want a bit of help. These are the seven best used motorcycles to buy if you can’t splurge on a brand new bike.

2005 Triumph Bonneville T100

A beautiful, vintage-style motorcycle to choose is the Triumph Bonneville T100. It has that awesome combination of old-world simplicity and the reliability that comes with newer bikes. The long double seat is a favorite feature, as is the two- and tri-tone paint schemes.

The 865cc air-cooled parallel-twin engine makes 61 horsepower, so it’s one of the best used motorcycles that could remain exciting for years to come. If you aren’t concerned about having the fastest motorcycle and are more concerned about the looks, you won’t go wrong with a Bonnie.

A good deal on a 2005 Bonnie is around $3,500 to $4,000 in good condition.

2008 Suzuki SV650

[imageSource url="https://media.wheelscene.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/09/2008-Suzuki-SV650F.jpg" id="10561" class="right"]

It’s the second-generation SV650, and it is definitely one of the best used motorcycles out there. It was available in a few choices: naked, full-fairing and with ABS. It’s one of the best used motorcycles for its extreme versatility. It looks like a sporty bike, rides like a cruiser, and is reliable beyond words.

Related Search Topics (Ads)

It’s a 645cc V-twin engine that makes 73 horsepower. The Suzuki SV650 is lightweight and very fuel efficient, making it a great choice for a newbie that intends on keeping their used motorcycle for a long time. You can snag a good one for between $4,000 and $6,000, depending on the mileage and condition.

The Fastest SUVs Will Get Your Family There in a Hurry

  • Steven Symes

Driving fast in an SUV was something that seemed ridiculous 20 years ago. Here we are, in the 21st century, and we've cracked the code of moving in a hurry with something large and tall. This list of some of the fastest SUVs proves that these are truly wondrous times we live in.

If you have the need for speed, but want to haul your IKEA purchases with ease, you might want to check out the following models. The list isn't necessarily in any particular order, because acceleration times will vary on who measures them. You'll also notice several are super close to each other, and one member of the list hasn't even been released.

Mercedes-AMG GLE63 S

If you want to transport up to seven people in extreme luxury, and get to where you're going in a hurry, this might be your best option. This SUV with third row seating has a decent amount of cargo behind the last row, making this ride a pretty versatile vehicle.

Mercedes-AMG uses a twin-turbo 5.5-liter V8 engine, which squeezes out 585 horsepower. You can scoot in a hurry, with a 0-to-60 time of 4.2 seconds. On a track, you can hit 160 mph, which has gotta be scary in such a large vehicle.

BMW X5 M

[imageSource url="https://media.wheelscene.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/10/BMWX5M.jpg" id="11038" class="right"]

The Bavarians know how to make fast cars. Even though BMW insists the X5 is an "SAV" (Sport Activity Vehicle) not an a true SUV, we're counting it for this list.

Related Search Topics (Ads)

Thanks to the mighty twin-turbo 4.4-liter V8, you have at your command 567 horsepower. When pressed, the BMW X5M charges from 0 to 60 mph in 4.0 seconds, making it one of the quickest SUVs you can buy right now. BMW electronically limits the top speed to 160 mph.

  • Jason Unrau

With no signs of slowing down anytime soon, auto makers are scrambling to get their products to market sooner than later. The 2018 model year booms with redesigns and new models hitting the ground. As a result there are some fantastic new models coming anytime now, especially when it comes to SUV crossovers.

It’s hard to rank the best SUV crossovers for 2018 right now, since there's no history of their dependability. However, that doesn't mean we can't look forward to them. Here are 13 SUV crossovers for model year 2018 that we think you should be excited about.

2018 Volkswagen Atlas

A highly acclaimed model that could contend with the best SUV crossovers for 2018 is the VW Atlas. It takes the traditional exterior approach that everyone loves and packs a whole lotta goodness inside.

The panoramic moonroof is massive, spanning all three rows of seating. A hands-free Easy Open power tailgate is available. The 12.3-inch all-digital instrument cluster display is phenomenal. Its 480-watt Fender sound system is wonderful. A 276-horsepower V6 with 5,000-lb towing capacity, 8-speed auto transmission, and available AWD are just what you need for confident everyday driving. Furthermore,  a 6-year/72,000-mile warranty makes this vehicle a good deal for just $30,500 to start.

2018 Alfa Romeo Stelvio Quadrifoglio

[imageSource url="https://media.wheelscene.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/09/2018-Alfa-Romeo-Stelvio-Quadrifoglio.jpg" id="10350" class="right"]

And then there's this Italian-inspired masterpiece. The 2018 Alfa Romeo Stelvio Quadrifoglio (QF for shorthand) is a marvel with the ability to dethrone all other high-performance crossover SUVs. An available 505-horsepower 2.9-liter twin-turbo V6 can reach 177 miles per hour, and performance is just one little aspect.

Alcantara interior components and premium Italian stitching surround you inside. Sparco racing seats are available. You get an infrared windshield and a race-inspired push-button start on the steering wheel. Gorgeous body lines and other Italian touches are everywhere. Top 10 Most Reliable Auto Brands in the United States

  • Chris Smith

We all have different buying triggers when plunking down money on a new ride. Wow factors vary. Sometimes it’s muscle, sometimes styling. Safety technology is a big seller, or maybe it’s a color you just have to have. People also want to consider the most reliable car brands in their decision to buy a brand new vehicle, or even a used one.

In fact, brand reliability may be the factor that seals the deal. It’s a sweet ride, it handles great, priced right and it’s a (fill in most reliable brand name here). Reliability means that your new dream car is going to start every time, run without breaking down, and inconvenience you as little as possible.

Because brand reliability ranks so high in the buying decision, manufacturers work hard to promote that quality for their products. Because manufacturers “promote” reliability, consumer watchdogs like J.D. Power and others regularly fact check reliability claims against reality.

What we have listed here are the 10 most reliable car brands based on data pulled from a number of respected sources. Each brand is rated on a five point scale. Is your car or truck brand listed?

Honda: 3.58 out of 5.0

In post WW II Japan, Soichiro Honda started building motorized bicycles using small motors salvaged from Army generators. Today Honda is a powerhouse in the automotive industry. It’s a powerhouse but it suffers a bit from “one bad apple” syndrome when it comes to reliability scoring.

Honda has a great reputation for reliability with many models including Accord and CRV scoring 4 out of five, according to J.D Power. Their leading product is the Honda Ridgeline that pulled a 4.5 out of 5. But the Honda Odyssey minivan pulled a sub-par 2.5 dropping Honda to the bottom of this list.

BMW: 3.60

[imageSource url="https://media.wheelscene.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/08/bmwlogo.jpg" id="10239" class="right"]

Consistency is the best way to explain BMW’s rating. According to J. D. Power the BMW line routinely rates average to above average with no outstanding models and no dogs.

Related Search Topics (Ads)

It is a bit disappointing however, to see a brand that features pricey vehicles rank as low on the list as it does. BMW is the exception that proves the rule. Just because something is expensive does not mean it exceeds at reliability.

The Coolest Cars at the Petersen Automotive Museum

  • Steven Symes

If you ever head to Los Angeles, one destination that should be on your list is the Petersen Automotive Museum. Located on Wilshire Boulevard, even the building stands out, thanks to the abstract metal "skin" on it.

The museum regularly gets new displays, and vehicles swap out all the time. In other words, you may or may not see everything on this list, but I guarantee that visiting will be a great time.

DeLorean DMC-12 from "Back to the Future"

This is a childhood fantasy of mine. Few cars are as beloved as the DeLorean DMC-12 that serves as a time machine. You get to see one of the original cars up close, and gawk at all the nerdy details from the movies. For example, the Flux Capacitor blinks behind the driver's seat, all the controls are present, and you can even see what time has been set for traveling.

I especially enjoyed how you can see scorching and exposed welds in the rear modifications. It adds a level of grit you probably subconsciously process in the movies, but don't really notice until the car is sitting right in front of you at the Petersen Automotive Museum.

2017 BMW 5 Series from "The Escape"

[imageSource url="https://media.wheelscene.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/06/BMW5series.jpg" id="10125" class="right"]

If you're a fan of BMW films, you need to see "The Escape," if you haven't already. BMW took a break from making excellent short films starring Bimmers (oh, and some people, too) but returned to that practice in the fall of 2016.

Related Search Topics (Ads)

I'm not going to explain the plot of "The Escape" here, because you should just watch it (the movie's under 14 minutes long). What's crazy about the 2017 5 Series at the Petersen Automotive Museum is that it was the car that was actually shot with live rounds during filming. You get to see bullet holes in the hood, driver's front fender, windshield and the driver's headrest (complete with a nasty exit wound on the backside). It's pretty crazy to see in person.

12 Affordable Sports Cars for Fun, Cheap Speed

  • Jason Unrau

If you're looking for the most affordable sports cars, you're in luck. Sports cars are one of the most popular and well-researched segments in the automotive world.

Like everything else out there, the best sports cars don’t come cheap. If you want one of the fastest sports cars or one with fancy leather and the latest bells and whistles, you won’t find it here. We’ve compiled the top 12 sports cars for the money-conscious buyer. It’s the most affordable sports cars for 2017.

2017 Mazda MX-5 Miata: $24,915

A pure driving experience, uninhibited by the frills you’ll find on luxury cars. It’s an iconic open-top sports car, the 2017 Mazda MX-5 Miata. It’s a clean design with simple lines but wholly gorgeous. And underneath that beautifully sloped hood is where the real magic is bottled up.

The 2017 Mazda MX-5 Miata is powered by a SKYACTIV-G 4-cylinder that makes 155 horsepower and 148 lb-ft. of torque. Immediately, you might question why this is even considered a sports car with those power numbers. It’s quickly answered when you discover the car weighs just 2,332 pounds. Mixed with a penny-pinching 6-speed rower, the Miata is a riot to drive.

For the base price of $24,915, you get decent equipment too. Power locks, power drop-top, a nice dashtop audio display with Bluetooth and headrest speakers, keyless entry, alloy wheels – all the basics are there plus more. It’s one of the most affordable sports cars you’ll find.

2017 Toyota 86: $26,255

It’s the first time in a very long time Toyota has had a rear-wheel-drive car in its lineup. The 2017 Toyota 86 is essentially the Scion FR-S rebadged for the parent brand since Scion is no more. Visually, it’s quite aggressive and appealing, contradicting most of the Toyota lineup altogether. The sexy little two-door, even in its basest configuration, is an enjoyable drive with great features.

Starting inside, the Scion – I mean, Toyota 86 – shows its value with bolstered seats, a three-spoke steering wheel, soft-touch materials, and a complement of standard power options. Amid the equipment, however, there’s a cheap feel inside, little you might expect from an entry-level Toyota.

That sensation disappears once you go for a boot. Its 2.0-liter Boxer engine is silky-smooth and has 205 horsepower. The 6-speed manual transmission is what you get for a little more than $26k. For the money, it’s all right. If you’re comparing it to a BMW or Porsche, it’s notching and unpleasant. But shoppers of affordable sports cars won’t mind or notice.
