Best Crossover SUV: Check Out the Best 2017 Has to Offer

  • Jason Unrau

Finding the best crossover SUV is a tall order. Crossover SUVs are the most popular and fastest-growing segment, so automakers are trying to create the next hit.

Crossover SUVs are, at their core, an SUV developed on a passenger car platform. Its underpinnings are a unibody design, and they’re geared more toward people who want more space and comfort than an off-road vehicle. In other words, they appeal to almost everyone.

Some carmakers hit it on the head, like the all-new 2017 Honda CR-V. Others, like the Mitsubishi Outlander, fall short of the mark by a long shot. We’ve compiled a list of options of what we think could be considered the best crossover SUV on the market for 2017.

2017 Mercedes-Benz GLS-Class

No surprise, the best crossover SUV could easily be from the luxury carmaker Mercedes-Benz. Its full complement of elegant options brings its price well above $65,000, but it’s still a crossover. It’s a handsome package and has techie items like cross-wind assist, an available air ionization system and seating for up to seven.

Each GLS-Class model has AWD and a nine-speed automatic transmission. Attached to the gearbox are engine options including a 362-hp twin-turbo V6 in the GLS450, a 449-hp twin-turbo V8 in the GLS550, and a 255-hp diesel engine in the GLS350d.

2017 Kia Soul

[imageSource url="https://media.wheelscene.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/03/KiaSoul.jpg" id="7769" class="right"]

Tickling the $17,000 sticker price is the 2017 Kia Sou. It's definitely the best crossover SUV if you're on a tighter budget. Despite its small size, it’s practical and has decent cargo space. What’s more, the Kia Soul is a riot to pilot.

Obviously, for its price you don't get a ton of high-end features. You’ll get the basic power options along with either a 1.6-liter or 2.0-liter engine with 130 or 161 hp respectively. The 201-hp four-cylinder and a dual-clutch transmission are a nice touch for extra money.

Top 10 Best Cars for Tall Drivers

  • Steven Symes

If you're talking about the best cars for tall drivers, you've got talk about legroom.

Short people might complain about all the advantages tall people enjoy, but when it comes to cars, certain models are just off-limits. Some cars we taller people can fit in, but our heads might be gracing the roof, or our knees are kissing the dash.

Comfort is a big deal, especially if you're going to be driving a car often. If you're especially tall, the range of vehicles that you can sit in long enough to do a road trip, or even navigate rush hour, can be limited.

To help you out, check out the top 10 best cars for tall people. This is limited to the best cars for tall drivers and is based off legroom, although vehicles with low headroom were thrown out in the process.

Lexus LS

If you're looking for popular luxury cars with legroom, this serves up both. You get 43.7 inches of legroom, which is generous, trumping almost all other full-size luxury sedans.

Beyond that giant spindle grille, the LS is a sumptuous and highly advanced vehicle. Far too many features and options exist to list out here. Just know you can get all kinds of cutting-edge tech, plus outrageous luxury like reclining rear seats and an extra-long wheelbase.

Toyota Highlander

[imageSource url="https://media.wheelscene.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/03/ToyotaHighlander-1.jpg" id="7656"]

You might not think of this option for tons of legroom, but it provides 44.2 inches of space for drivers. Not only that, this popular SUV comes with three rows, which for a midsize model also features at least a decent amount of legroom in the second row.

Toyota offers plenty of features for this SUV, including an efficient hybrid powertrain. The interior is surprisingly premium, too, and you enjoy an amazing level of silence, thanks to plenty of insulation.

The Best Luxury Hybrid Cars for 2017 Are Charged Up

  • Jason Unrau

We're not talking about the Toyota Prius here, we're talking about luxury hybrid cars. If the decades-old Prius is your idea of what a hybrid car is all about, your paradigm is about to shift.

When fuel efficiency and performance are front and center, impressive new things come about. We’re not talking about hypercars like the Porsche 918 Spyder or electric cars such as the Tesla Model S. We're talking about the best luxury hybrid cars for 2017.

Here’s how it goes: the more money a car manufacturer has to spend, the better the technology that results in its products. That’s precisely why you’ll find more premium names on luxury hybrid cars for 2017. Badges like BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Audi and others from the best luxury cars are the norm. Read on to see the best luxury hybrid cars for 2017.

2017 Lexus CT 200h

The curious styling of the Lexus CT 200h is going to move you one way or another – you’ll love it or hate it. The five-door hatchback design is reminiscent of an upscale Mazda on the outside, but it’s a luxury car through and through between the doors. The cockpit is very much laid out as a premium model with flat, classy buttons and a highly-visible, top-mounted infotainment screen. Interior materials are great quality, even if you don’t choose the true leather interior.

Impressively, the 2017 Lexus CT 200h has 134 hp and is still a blast to drive. Its combined EPA-rated fuel efficiency is 42 mpg for long-range hybrid driving abilities. The Lexus CT 200h starts out at a paltry $31,250 MSRP, making it a reasonably priced option too.

The Lexus CT 200h has been sold in the U.S. since 2011, so if you're wondering if you should buy a used luxury car, as well as a hybrid, this would be a solid option.

2017 Audi A3 Sportback e-tron

[imageSource url="http://media.wheelscene.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/03/AudiA3Sportbacke-tron.jpg" id="7602"]

Something with a bit more power is the 2017 Audi A3 Sportback e-tron. It’s a premium car from a premium brand, albeit a jazzed-up Jetta. What the VW Jetta doesn’t have, though, is the fine touches of Audi-ness. You get an onslaught of driver-assistance features, including front and rear collision pre-sense systems, along with Audi Lane Assist and Adaptive Cruise Control.

Related Search Topics (Ads)

The 2017 Audi A3 Sportback e-tron is powered by a 1.4-liter gas engine and plug-in electric motor. Combined, the A3 e-tron hybrid has 204 hp. The EPA-rated MPG-e (meaning equivalent) is a remarkable 83 mpg. My oh my… its pricing starts at $38,900.

The Most Fuel Efficient Trucks of 2017 Will Keep You on the Job Longer

  • Jason Unrau

So you're looking for the trucks with best gas mileage? Or have you already bought a truck and now you’re wondering how it stacks up? Fuel efficiency is a huge concern in today’s market for buyers and car makers alike.

Take a quick look at the most fuel efficient trucks of 2017. We’ll give you the basic rundown of each model and the powertrain that puts it on the list. It might help you decide on the right truck for you.

2017 Toyota Tacoma

This midsized pickup truck stakes its claim as one tough contender. It can be loaded up with the TRD-Pro package for serious offroading, but that’s not the model that gets the best fuel efficiency. Instead, you’ll be looking at the entry-level trim lines.

With 19 miles per gallon in the city and 23 miles per gallon on the highway (EPA ratings, of course), the 2017 Toyota Tacoma does respectably well. That’s equipped with the 159-hp 2.7-liter four-cylinder engine, six-speed automatic transmission, and rear-wheel drive. It’s just enough for the very occasional hauler. The Toyota Tacoma is also one of the cheapest new trucks, so you can save at the pump and dealership.

2017 Nissan Frontier

[imageSource url="http://media.wheelscene.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/03/NissanFrontier.jpg" id="7538"]

Don’t worry, not every truck will be a midsized truck on the list of trucks with best gas mileage, but this one is too. The 2017 Nissan Frontier isn’t usually known for its fuel efficiency, but there’s a configuration that should be considered. Check out the 2017 Nissan Frontier King Cab at the bottom end of the trim lines.

If you pick a king-cab Frontier with the 152-hp 2.5-liter four-cylinder, five-speed manual gearbox, and rear-wheel drive, you can scrape out 19 miles per gallon in the city and 23 miles per gallon on the highway, according to EPA ratings. Its 0-60 time is ... hang on a second ... wait, it’s still trying to get to 60. We’ll touch base later on that.

Looking for the Most Fuel Efficient SUV? Don’t Look to Domestic Cars

  • Jason Unrau

If you want some room in your ride but also want to be able to afford to drive it, you're looking for the most fuel efficient SUV of 2017.

SUVs are at their height of popularity right now. That’s no surprise – everyone wants the most bang for their buck, and that goes for space and comfort too. But that doesn’t mean you want to buy a gas guzzler, you'd still like to save gas if you can.

It should come as no surprise that none of the vehicles on the top 10 most fuel efficient SUVs of 2017 are domestic brands. Every single one is an Asian brand, which might tell you a little something about where the American brands might want to focus their attention.

The top 10 are rated based on their combined EPA fuel economy ratings, and equipped with an automatic transmission to keep things on the same level.

10. 2017 Subaru Crosstrek

Subaru’s 2.0-liter opposing four-cylinder Boxer engine powers the 2017 Crosstrek, producing 148 hp. It’s by no means the most powerful SUV you’ll find, not even in Subaru’s lineup, but it’s fuel efficiency is quite respectable.

The 2017 Subaru Crosstrek manages 26 mpg in the city and 33 mpg on the highway. What’s more impressive about that is the Crosstrek has Subaru’s Symmetrical AWD as standard equipment. It doesn’t seem to hinder efficiency.

9. 2017 Nissan Juke

[imageSource url="http://media.wheelscene.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/03/NissanJuke.jpg" id="7509"]

For 2017, the Nissan Juke stays very much the same as the past few years. Under the hood, you’ll find a 1.6-liter turbocharged inline-four, pushing 188 hp. The lightweight, subcompact SUV (or cute-ute, as they say) is nimble and fun to throw around the road.

Related Search Topics (Ads)

When you’re behind the wheel of the 2017 Nissan Juke, you can expect fuel efficiency in the vicinity of 28 mpg city and 32 mpg hwy. It’s exceptional for an SUV with 188 hp and an automatic transmission. I don’t imagine the Juke Nismo RS gets anywhere near that.

Looking for the Most Reliable Truck? Check Out These Haulers

  • Jason Unrau

It would be hard to determine the most reliable truck that ever hauled somebody's bedroom suite to their new house. If you're in the business of putting your truck to the test daily, reliability and dependability are paramount. You won't want to be in a situation where your truck won't start. Trucks are expensive to maintain, and even more expensive to fix.

J.D. Power's Vehicle Dependablity Study has rated three-year-old trucks based on design and defect issues their owners noted. If you're looking for the most reliable truck, one of these haulers won't let you down.

Chevy Silverado HD

It’s the first year of the new Silverado HD body style and, surprisingly, their owners think the world of them. That’s not something often said of the first year of any new vehicle redesign. The gas job of the 2014 Silverado HD has 4.10 gears for incredible towing capabilities, and the optional bulletproof Duramax turbodiesel engine and Allison transmission are a carryover from the previous generation.

Related Search Topics (Ads)

With the reliability of the powertrain, it’s not so shocking that people love this truck. Both the Silverado 2500 HD and 3500 HD are included here, which are the real workhorses of the Chevy lineup. The interior and electrical problems, including widespread recalls, don’t seem to faze these hardworking folks quite so much.

Ford F150

[imageSource url="http://media.wheelscene.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/03/2014FordF150.jpg" id="7443"]

The 2014 Ford F150, on the other hand, is the last model year in its generation. Ford had since the 2009 model year to work out the kinks, and that’s just what they did. The broken spark plug problem had been corrected and fun-loving variants like the F150 Tremor with a twin-turbo V6 were introduced.

America’s best-selling pickup truck just couldn’t stay the course. The 2015 model year saw an aluminum body and with polarizing opinions all over the interweb. And although the new truck is significantly classier, people just love their 12th-gen F150s.

In North America, the luxury car industry is a growing segment. New models and brands are introduced with regularity, including Hyundai’s offshoot, Genesis, and the ever-changing Infiniti lineup.

10. Audi A3

Even though it’s Audi’s entry-level model, the Audi A3 is one of the most popular luxury cars in the United States. For its success, all signs point to its appeal to different demographics – there’s an A3 sedan for the business-class buyer, an A3 Sportback for the small family and the A3 Cabriolet for the free-spirited soul.

Two choices of engines with either 220 hp or 186 hp, front-wheel drive or available Quattro AWD, and manual or dual-clutch automatic transmissions create plenty of options for buyers. And inside, this luxury model can be either modestly equipped or packed to the hilt with Bang & Olufsen sound, leather seating and a panoramic sunroof.

9. Lexus IS

[imageSource url="http://media.wheelscene.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/03/LexusISd.jpg" id="7413"]

A sports sedan that could pass as a coupe, the Lexus IS embodies the new, bold look the brand is pushing. The sexy hourglass grille and squinting headlights give you a glimpse into the attitude you’ll find inside the Lexus IS.

Power production ranges from 241 hp in the IS Turbo to 306 hp in the IS 350. When equipped with AWD, you’ll put every pony onto the ground for a truly exhilarating ride. Inside, Lexus hasn’t cut any corners. Every line and seam is intentionally placed, and the sharp, square lines are typical Lexus. You’ll fall in love with the 10.3-inch multimedia display - along with everything else. And don’t miss out on the Lexu IS F Sport.

The Safest SUVs of 2017 Are Good to Tote Your Family

  • Jason Unrau

The safest SUVs of 2017 are an impressive lot. Every year, IIHS looks at every vehicle built for the North American market. They rank vehicles based on their ability to protect occupants in a collision, their ability to avoid a collision, down to the headlights’ function of illuminating the road ahead.

SUVs are ever increasing in popularity right now, especially among families. So, it’s just natural that they’ve been rated based on the safety aspect by the IIHS. Top performers have been assigned either the Top Safety Pick rating, or the highest rating of Top Safety Pick +.

These are just 10 of the SUVs that made the list.

Compact SUVs

2017 Mazda CX-3

This is the second year running that the Mazda CX-3 has been a Top Safety Pick +. All around, it’s a great-looking SUV and one of the more enjoyable small SUVs to drive. Not to mention a very fuel efficient SUV. It operates like a sports sedan mostly, but has the space you want in an SUV.

That extra space is probably what makes its crash rating so good. However, in order for the CX-3 to receive the Top Safety Pick + rating, it must have the LED projector headlights. Its standard halogen headlights don’t do the trick.

2017 Nissan Rogue

[imageSource url="http://media.wheelscene.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/03/Nissan-Rogue.jpg" id="7334"]

The Nissan Rogue isn’t often thought to be a contender for much. That said, it’s a pretty amazing vehicle for the price. The 2017 Nissan Rogue has a flexible price range, and it’s the upper echelon that gets the Top Safety Pick + rating.

The Safest Cars of 2017 Will Get You There Unscathed

  • Jason Unrau

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has released its list of the safest cars of 2017. The safest cars receive the title of Top Safety Pick and Top Safety Pick +.

You don’t have to be Constable Responsible to be concerned about car safety. In 2015 alone, more than 35,000 people died in the US as a result of car crashes. That seems to be important enough to factor into your vehicle purchase decision, doesn’t it?

What Does It Take to Qualify as One of the Safest Cars of 2017?

For Top Safety Pick status, the model must get "good" ratings in the following five criteria:

  • Small overlap front collision
  • Moderate overlap front collision
  • Side collision
  • Roof strength
  • Head restraints.

As well, the car must receive an advanced or superior rating for front crash prevention.

Top Safety Pick + takes it a few steps further. In addition to the above standards, the car must be rated "acceptable" or "good" in headlight ratings.

For 2017, here are some of the safest cars you can choose.

Minicars

2017 Mini Cooper

This year, the Mini Cooper achieves Top Safety Pick status. It’s based on its good ratings in crash testing, which is pretty surprising considering the tiny stature.

It may have even reached the TSP+ ratings if the headlights were up to par. The headlight rating was "marginal," relegating the 2017 Mini Cooper to sit at the kiddie table.

2017 Toyota Yaris iA

[imageSource url="http://media.wheelscene.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/03/2017_Toyota_Yaris_iA_7_E469778EAFF7C71FB4087E01BAD1480199F12010-min.jpg" id="7296"]

The 2017 Toyota Yaris iA is one of just two minicars on the market to achieve IIHS Top Safety Pick ratings. This model was formerly from the Scion brand, now wrapped into Toyota’s expanding lineup.

While its crash ratings are "good" across the board, headlight ratings are "poor." Meaning Toyota will need to brighten up the lighting to do better next year.

Charged Up: Bestselling Electric Cars of All Time

  • Chris Smith

Growth in electronic vehicle sales over the past two years have been spectacular despite the slash in gas prices. Since first showing up on U.S. streets in 2010, consumers have purchased over 530,000 units, according to industry authority InsideEV.

All that said, electric vehicles in the U.S. fall into two categories. The first are those models that do high volume and are in the running based on their marketability. The second are models built to meet California regulations that require six large automakers to sell a certain number of zero-emission vehicles.

So the electric vehicle is here and it appears to be here to stay. Here is a list of the bestselling electric cars based on total unit sales since 2010.

No. 10 Volkswagen e-Golf

Volkswagen, the company that desperately wants to be the largest auto company in the world, has great plans for all electric vehicles. Unfortunately the best they can do for the time being is drop a battery into a Golf as a "compliance" car.

Maybe VW has been distracted by Dieselgate and other strategies that don't look like such great ideas in retrospect. That said, the e-Golf has sold 8,083 units in the two years it has been on the market, which is enough to make the Top 10 List.

9. Tesla Model X

With only 12 months on the market and a limited ability to deliver, the Tesla X has racked up 14,562 sales. All we can say is wait until next year (assuming production capacity increases) when we think the Model X will crack the top 5 list of bestselling EVs.

The whole Tesla model is disrupting the auto industry and raising the bar again with its latest entry.
