What’s the Best Pickup Truck in America for 2017?

  • Jason Unrau

Truck owners are a devoted bunch. Tell somebody that a different truck is better than the one they drive and you're liable to end up in a fist fight. Still, trying to determine the best pickup truck of 2017 is irresistible.

Feel free to argue and make your voice heard for your opinion of the best pickup truck this year, but this is our run down.

13. 2017 Chevrolet Colorado

There’s little doubt the bowtie-wearing Colorado is the nerd of the truck world in North America. It’s a midsize pickup that could be mistaken for a compact. That is, unless you choose the beefier trim, the 2017 Chevrolet Colorado Z71. Anything less than that will leave you itching for your first opportunity to trade it in for a real truck. And yet, it is always one of the best selling pickup trucks year in and year out.

A 200-horsepower, 191 lb-ft 2.5-liter engine is the base power plant, and it’s insufferably soft. The 2.8-liter Duramax turbo-diesel might not sound much better at 181 horsepower, but 369 lb-ft of torque makes up for it. The standard Z71 engine is a 3.6-liter V6 with 308 horsepower and 275 lb-ft of torque, making it the most capable of the bunch.

Inside, the Colorado is blah at best. MyLink with voice recognition and available navigation is great and all, but the comfort is sadly lacking. Compared to a real truck, you fold yourself into the cab, only to question why you didn’t just bite the bullet for something more.

12. 2017 Nissan Frontier

[imageSource url="https://media.wheelscene.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/08/Frontier.jpg" id="10088" class="right"]

The Nissan Frontier was once a great competitor in the field. Its 261-horsepower 4.0-liter V6 was included in most packages save for a few 2WD trims that received a four-cylinder. And the fact that it’s a body-on-frame midsize truck gives it true truck-like abilities. Available Bilstein suspension is a good touch, and the PRO-4X package was among the best for value and performance.

Related Search Topics (Ads)

But the 2017 Nissan Frontier is a relic – an ancient artifact too dated to be in the running for best pickup truck. It’s so overdue for a redesign that new units on the lot look like old trucks. The interior is unforgivable for 2017 with a heavy plastic feel, and totally devoid of driver assist options. Despite all it’s good stuff, there’s no way the Nissan Frontier can rank any higher than second to last on our quest to the best pickup truck.

The 13 Best Luxury Cars in America Have It All, And Then Some

  • Jason Unrau

A massive estate, a gorgeous Sea Ray yacht, a Bora Bora vacation home – they’re all things that are a vision of wealth and luxury, and so are the best luxury cars.

But luxury cars aren’t just for those with maidservants and a butler at their beck and call. True, there are some uber-expensive pipe dream cars on the market, and you might even see a few of them right here. But luxury doesn’t have to always break the bank.

Some carmakers have the right combination of luxury and affordability while others go for the gusto with each and every model. And whichever end of the spectrum you prefer, you’ll find it in these 13 best luxury cars in America.

BMW M2

Getting back to the roots of what makes the M coupe special is the 2017 BMW M2. The performance you can expect in the compact luxury car is unreal with 365 horsepower from a turbo 3.0-liter inline-six. With a dual-clutch gearbox, the M2 can sprint to 60 mph in just 4.0 seconds. But the BMW M2 is more than that.

The interior is dressed in Dakota Black Leather, Polar Blue contrast stitching and elegant Black Panel technology for dramatic flair. With flashes of carbon fiber and an incredibly tight fit and finish, along with the some truly impressive driver-assistance technologies, the BMW M2 is highly regarded as one of the 10 best luxury cars.

Audi S8

[imageSource url="https://media.wheelscene.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/08/AudiS8.jpg" id="10061" class="right"]

Like you’d expect from a luxury car starting at $116,000, the 2018 Audi S8 is as much a work of art as it is an overtly functional vehicle. It makes a statement with a sexy, slender and athletic shape despite its full-size status. The S8 is an iconic masterpiece with the Audi Singleframe grille and carbon-fiber accents all around. The interior is even more stunning with diamond-patterned leather upholstery, a wrap-around dash design and a unique T-style shifter.

But the 2018 Audi S8 is more than just a pretty face and fancy dress-up. It’s a performance luxury car through and through. The turbocharged 4.0-liter TFSI engine makes a monstrous 605 horsepower and 517 lb-ft of torque, propelling the S8 down the straightaway from 0 to 60 in just 3.7 seconds. It rides like a dream on adaptive air suspension for a serene experience, and the Quattro All Wheel Drive system is standard equipment for the ultimate in control.

6 DIY Car Maintenance Tips That Even You Can Handle

  • Jason Unrau

You’re tired of leaving the repair shop with your pocket turned out? We get it. Car maintenance costs have skyrocketed, nearly doubling in the past 15 years. That hurts. You need some DIY car maintenance tips.

Once your vehicle is five years old, you’ll likely spend as much on maintenance and repairs annually as you would on car payments for a new one, unless you've got a low maintenance car. That's no good.

Keep your money in your own pocket with DIY car maintenance. Grab the right tools for working on your car and you could save hundreds annually.

Oil and Filter Changes

Get your oil and filter at an automotive store when there’s a sale on the good stuff or browse online. Buy a sturdy oil drain bucket, a pair of car ramps, a bag of absorbent material and a spare drain plug (you’ll use it eventually).

Oil and filter changes are quite simple to perform on your own. Run the engine for at least a few minutes to get the oil warm and flowing. With guidance from a good buddy, drive your car up onto the ramps. Loosen and remove the drain plug, letting it completely drain into your bucket. While it’s draining, change the oil filter. Put the drain plug back in and tighten it snug. Fill the oil up to the "full" line on the dipstick – no higher. Make sure you've got the right oil for your car, too.

Tire Rotations

You’re aware your tires wear unevenly front to back, and the dealer can charge $30 or more to simply switch them around. Tackle it yourself to save some jangle in your jeans.

Jack up your car and place it on jack stands. You can do it one side at a time, left or right. Remove all the lug nuts from both wheels and simply move the front wheel to the back and the rear wheel to the front. Install the lug nuts and tighten them to the torque spec indicated in your owner’s manual.

Air Filter Replacement

It’s the easiest of DIY car maintenance, and the most forgotten as well. A dirty air filter will affect your fuel mileage badly and can cause your engine to run poorly. A new air filter is usually only $10 to $40, depending on the car you drive.

Related Search Topics (Ads)

Open the car and locate your air filter housing. If you can’t find it, close the hood and throw your keys in the lake. You can’t drive anymore. Remove the clips or screws holding the lid in place. Inside, you’ll find the air filter. Toss the old one and fit the new one in the same orientation. Then, close it up. You’re done.

Transmission Fluid Change

We’re getting a little tricky now with our DIY car maintenance. The transmission fluid change is one of the most expensive maintenance items to have done at the dealership or repair shop. You can save a couple hundred bucks by doing it yourself, but be careful. It is crucial that you use the correct fluid or you could cook the transmission. It's also good to know how often you should change your transmission fluid.

Lift your car on jacks, then slide underneath. Some vehicles will have a drain plug on the transmission, while others require the trans oil pan be removed and reinstalled.

  1. If yours has a drain plug, simply pull the lower plug on the trans case and let the fluid fully drain. Tighten it back up, then fill the transmission. Use only the fluid grade specified in the owner’s manual, and precisely the quantity as well.
  2. If your transmission does not have a drain plug, remove the trans pan. It’s simply bolted on, but you may have to lightly pry to unstick the gasket material. The fluid spills all over the place usually, so be prepared for cleanup afterwards. Change the filter at the same time, while you’re in there already. Clean the pan and sealing surface of all the old gasket stuff, then reseal the trans pan with a new gasket or RTV sealant, whichever yours has. Fill the transmission at the dipstick tube, keeping the level within the "safe zone."

Brake Fluid Change

Brake fluid is hygroscopic, meaning it absorbs water molecules. It can only contain so much before it needs to be changed, often requiring replacement every three years. Use the correct fluid spec only, whether it’s DOT3 or DOT4 or whatever.

At each of your calipers, there’s a bleeder screw. Attach a hose to the bleeder screw and run it into a bottle. It’s a good investment to buy a bleeder hose with a check valve, you’ll see why in a minute. Open the bleeder screw and press the brake pedal to the floor. Tighten the bleeder screw, then release the brake pedal. Be careful not to release the pedal before the screw is tight or air will get into the system, and you’ll be bleeding forever. Open, stomp, tighten, release. Repeat.

Keep topping up the brake fluid reservoir with clean fluid whenever it gets low. The brake-bleeding job is done at each wheel when clean fluid is visible in the bleeder hose. Repeat at all four wheels. And yes, it gets monotonous.

Tip: It’s a two-man job unless you have the bleeder hose with a check valve. With the check valve, you don’t need to tighten the bleeder screw between brake pedal presses. You’ll save time and eliminate the potential of air getting into the brake fluid lines.

Power Steering Fluid Change

Also a simple DIY car maintenance procedure, power steering fluid is forgotten on a regular basis. Dirty fluid develops an abrasive quality and can destroy the seals in your steering rack and pump. Change it every three years or so.

Buy a large turkey baster-like suction tool. With the engine off, suck the fluid out of the reservoir and fill it with clean fluid. Again, use only the fluid that is specified in the owner’s manual. Run the engine, turning the wheels from left to right a few times. Shut the engine off and repeat the suction. You’ll notice the fluid looks much cleaner after just two or three cycles. As long as the fluid looks clean and it doesn’t smell burnt, you’re good to go. Top up the power steering fluid reservoir and hit the road.

Low Maintenance Cars: 10 Rides with the Cheapest Upkeep

  • Jason Unrau

You can afford the car, but can you keep it in service? Cars break down and need repairs, as well as regular car maintenance. That’s just a part of car ownership. And that’s precisely what makes low maintenance cars a desirable commodity.

You won’t find the most luxurious, best equipped, highest performance, nor the sexiest cars on this list. Hell, there’s even a pickup truck and a hybrid in the top 10. What you will find are a bunch of cars that you won’t have a problem keeping on the road.

These models have been ranked based on their cost of maintenance over 10 years. So you shouldn’t be surprised at which brand takes five of the top 10 places (six if you count Scion).

Kia Optima: $6,400

Squeaking in to 10th place is the Kia Optima. And now there's even a Kia Optima hybrid option, so in future years that could bump it higher on the list. It’s been a reliable, consistent sedan for Kia for nearly two decades. While it hasn’t always been as sleek and sophisticated as it is for 2017, the Kia Optima isn’t commonly found at the side of the road.

Despite being known for engine failure, the typical Optima owner can expect repair bills to tally up to just $6,400 over 10 years, or $640 per year.

9. Scion xB: $6,300

[imageSource url="https://media.wheelscene.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/08/ScionxB.jpg" id="10033" class="right"]

Before being wrapped up into the Toyota brand, Scion was a youthful brand that embraced no-frills equipment while remaining sporty. Because of its limited options, there simply happened to be less to go wrong. Its love-it-or-hate-it design has since been dropped from the lineup.

Fewer systems to experience problems means fewer repair and maintenance costs. Oil consumption issues and power steering failures were the most reported issues in the past 10 years. However, the average annual cost for maintenance is $630, or $6,300 over a 10-year span.

These Classic Car Restoration Tips Will Save You Time, Money and Your Sanity

  • Jason Unrau

A classic car restoration, for the average human with an average income and average space to clutter up in the garage, will usually take years, not weeks or months. It’s a long-haul labor of love (and hate) that comes with screaming, crying, throwing tools, and a massive smile when you mash the pedal for the first time.

If a classic car restoration is on your plate, let us give you a hand - figuratively, not physically of course. Here are the broad strokes of the steps to take your car project from a junk heap to a show stopper. And before you begin, you probably want to make sure you've got the right tools for a restoration.

1. Assess the Body

It all starts with some planning. The first thing, and the most important thing, is to start with a solid car. Rust holes in a panel or two aren’t bad. Most classic cars have replacement panels available and dents and dings can be banged out. But if you’re starting out with rotten frame rails or the cancerous type of rust on more than just a few spots, you’re starting with the wrong car.

Unless you’re working on an extremely rare, matching-numbers car, expect to repair 30 percent of the panels, even with minimal rust showing. If you can see holes in a couple of panels, expect to touch at least half the car with body repairs, not just paint prep. Time wise, expect about four hours per panel. That means you’re at around 25 to 40 hours of body work with a relatively clean car. See why you don’t want to start with a wreck?

2. Plan the Powertrain

[imageSource url="https://media.wheelscene.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/06/engine-min.jpg" id="9972" class="right"]

There are so many options for powertrains, regardless of which car you choose. You can keep it original and just rebuild the engine and drivetrain the car originally had, or you can change it up. You can choose a higher displacement motor, build it with performance parts, add a supercharger or turbo, swap from standard to auto tranny – the options are seemingly endless.

Related Search Topics (Ads)

If you want to get crazy and don’t care about the haters, you could bastardize the powertrain too. One crazy guy I know (my dad) slapped a 6.2-liter Chevy diesel into a 1967 Mercury half-ton pickup because someone told him he couldn’t. Just be aware you’ll get feedback.

The main focus is to know what your power goals are, and what parts you need to achieve them. Set a budget for your powertrain, then double it. And expect to still go over budget.

Keep Dreaming: These Are the 10 Most Expensive Luxury Cars

  • Jason Unrau

You love the finer things in life. Leatherette seating surfaces, drinking wine out of a bottle (not a box), and wearing your tuxedo t-shirt to Ruby Tuesdays for the all-you-can-eat salad bar. That’s great and all, but these most expensive luxury cars are a step above.

We’re talking cars that can easily push six figures with a couple options. They’re all production cars, not one-off bespoke models, although a few could be. These are the crème de la crème, the most expensive luxury cars your money can buy in the United States for 2017.

10. 2017 Lexus LS 460 AWD Long Wheel Base Sedan

So this is our starting point. The 2017 Lexus LS 460 with all-wheel drive and in the long-wheel base version can be equipped with a plethora of interior color combinations, all in leather, woodgrain and aluminum accent. Things really start to get out of control with an optional package, the Executive-Class Seating Package for an extra $15,960. It includes features like a rear-seat entertainment system, four-zone climate concierge, power adjustable butterfly headrests and more.

The LS 460 comes standard with a 386-horsepwer 4.6-liter V8, so it’s no slouch in performance. Compared with others to come, it’s a lightweight. The base price is $82,305 for the LWB Lexus LS 460, but with the exec seating and other options, it can easily top $100,000.

9. 2017 Cadillac CT6 3.0l Twin Turbo Platinum AWD

[imageSource url="https://media.wheelscene.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/06/CadillacCT6.jpg" id="8856" class="right"]

The Cadillac CT6 sedan starts out in the mid-50’s (like its drivers) but can top out much higher. Choose the 2017 Cadillac CT6 Platinum with the optional 3.0-liter twin-turbo V6 and you’re looking at $88,790 to start.

At that price point, there aren’t many options to add unless you want 20-inch polished wheels and a trunk lip spoiler. With this setup, you get Cadillac’s CUE system, an extremely sexy interior, AWD, Cadillac’s Enhanced Night Vision system, and the 404-horsepower engine with Automatic Stop/Start.

SUVs with Third Row Seating: Because You Don’t Want a Minivan

  • Jason Unrau

With the exception of a few good choices, the minivan segment has all but dried up. Instead, those van customers have turned to a different vehicle category altogether,  one that isn’t embarrassing to be seen driving. SUVs with third row seating are a hit for a number of reasons.

They have nearly as much as space as a minivan. You can easily fold down the third row, or remove it, to make room for cargo. SUVs are usually more capable and versatile than a minivan. Most importantly, they don't bed to be mocked.

Whether it’s a crossover or a midsize SUV or a full-size SUV on a truck platform, there are plenty to choose from. Here are just 10 SUVs with third row seating that we think are pretty great.

2017 Lincoln Navigator

One large SUV that does a great job as a three-row vehicle is the 2017 Navigator. It has a bold, stylish interior that emphasizes occupant comfort. That even goes for the third-row seat with plenty of leg space for small to medium adults, not to mention kids of all shapes. If you get the 2017 Lincoln Navigator L, there’s even more leg space in the second and third rows, and added space for cargo also.

The price tag is a little restrictive at $63,515 and up, but the quality is there. It’s powered by the 3.5-liter EcoBoost engine shared with the F-150, so it hauls well too. But when the highly anticipated 2018 Navigator comes out, this one will be completely forgotten…

2017 Acura MDX

[imageSource url="https://media.wheelscene.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/06/AcuraMDX.jpg" id="8841" class="right"]

The 2017 Acura MDX is more manageable than a full-size SUV without giving up any of the good stuff. It’s fun to drive with 290 horsepower (321 horsepower in the hybrid version) and it’s chock full of goodies. We’re talking natural wood accents, fine leather surfaces, available widescreen rear-seat entertainment and much more.

Related Search Topics (Ads)

The 2017 MDX has decent passenger space for all three rows, and pays special attention to entry and exit from the third-row seating. The second and third rows can be tucked away if they’re not in use, which is great for most people. Best of all, it doesn’t look like a minivan. Definitely one of the best SUVs with third row seating.

SUV Camping: Turn Your Ride into the Ultimate Outdoors Machine

  • Steven Symes

Just because you're going to be spending the night outside doesn't mean you have to suffer. To the contrary, SUV camping can be a comfortable and convenient way to enjoy the great outdoors.

With a little preparation, you can make your SUV the ultimate camping machine. It's a great idea to save some money on a road trip or just for a long weekend. A lot of these tips can apply to trucks or SUVs.

Attachable Tent

You can get SUV tents, or tents that attach to SUVs, all over the place. They are ideal for SUV camping. Most hook onto the open tailgate, while others connect to an open door. Just remember to switch off the dome lights, or you might find starting your vehicle to be impossible in the morning.

These are great options if you want to access stuff in your SUV, without walking outside. They also make use of the SUV's interior, so you combine it with the tent area. Of course, you can buy SUV tents in all kinds of sizes. Some even stand up on their own, so during the day you can go somewhere in your SUV and keep the tent in your spot to keep it reserved.

Air Bed

[imageSource url="https://media.wheelscene.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/06/Airbed.jpg" id="8813" class="right"]

I've slept in SUVs many, many times. Let me tell you, sleeping in the cargo area, with the rear seats folded flat, is never comfortable. That's why I highly suggest getting an air bed for SUV camping if you're going to sleep in the back. If you've got a big SUV, this won't be any issue.

Related Search Topics (Ads)

An air bed will be the difference between being groggy the next day and having energy for a long hike. You also won't have horrible back pains, which can make riding on a trail, rowing in a boat, or doing basically anything else unbearable.

Some people say sleeping in your SUV isn't really camping. Considering that you're in a locked, secure area, it's not a bad idea. If it rains hard, you don't need to worry about the rain fly on your tent failing, or the stakes in the ground coming loose.

The Most Reliable Luxury Cars, Because No One Likes Repairs

  • Jason Unrau

So you're going to plop down a big chunk of change on a sweet new luxury vehicle. Good for you. Obviously, you want to know that the money you spend isn’t doing down the drain as soon as you fork it over. You’d definitely prefer to buy one of the most reliable luxury cars, because who has the time or money to bring your car to the dealership every other day?

Some of these luxury cars are actually SUVs too. They’ve been added in because SUVs are so popular right now that there’s no reason NOT to include them. Check out the options, then head down to the dealer with your fistfuls of Benjamins to buy your choice.

Lexus ES 350

It’s not just a glorified Toyota. The Lexus ES 350 is the best bang for your buck in the premium or luxury market. At its core, the Lexus ES 350 is a powerful 268-horsepower sedan that’s suitable for business class or comfy family transportation. It’s a sharp-looking car, which is great – you’ll get to stare at it as much as you want in your driveway. That’s because it won’t be trapped in the dealership’s service department all the time.

From powertrain to interior functions, the Lexus ES 350 is the most reliable luxury car you can find right now.

Lincoln MKZ

Lincoln has done great things with the MKZ sedan (one of which is getting Matthew McConaughey on board). Behind a pretty face lies a sleeper of a luxury or premium car. The Lincoln MKZ offers a powerful drive, a refined interior, and a sophistication that sets it far apart from its Ford cousins.

The Lincoln MKZ is just barely surpassed by the Lexus ES, and by the narrowest of margins. You won’t go wrong choosing either one if you're looking for the most reliable luxury cars.

Whether You Need It or Not, These Are the 10 Biggest SUVs

  • Jason Unrau

Is bigger really better? When it comes the biggest SUV you can find, it all depends on why you need it. Some car buyers want a vehicle that sits them up nice and tall in traffic. Others need to haul children like a Bluebird school bus. And some simply think finding the biggest SUV makes them a badass.

Whatever your reason, these are the 10 biggest SUVs you’ll find in these parts.

2017 Chevrolet Suburban

Chevy has always had a knack for making things bigger. The Suburban has been the cream of the crop for quite some time in the behemoth SUV segment. Its monstrous interior could span three time zones and requires a long distance calling card for third-row passengers to talk to the driver. The 2017 Chevrolet Suburban has a ridiculously large capacity for cargo, allowing up to 121.7 cubic feet of space behind the front seats, and even 39.3 cu ft. behind the third row.

The exterior is large too. It’s essentially a Chevy Silverado with an SUV cab, full frame and all. The Suburban comes with the 5.3-liter EcoTec3 V8 with 355 horsepower and 383 lb-ft of torque, so you can tow like a truck while hauling a cabin full of people.

2017 Mercedes-Benz GLS-Class

If your game needs to bump up a notch, the GLS-Class could be what you need. It’s a mix of cutting-edge technology, luxury and performance, and it has oodles of space to go with it. The interior has Eucalyptus wood trim, multicolor ambient lighting, Easy Entry second row seats, power folding third-row seats, and it has heated and cooled cupholders. And that’s just to start.

The cabin itself has 93.8 cubic feet of cargo space with the rear seats folded down, which should be enough for any family that can still afford a GLS-Class. What’s most impressive in the GLS-Class is the engine lineup. A 362-hp biturbo 3.0-liter V6, a 449-hp 4.7-liter biturbo V8, or a 577-hp 5.5-liter biturbo AMG V8 are all available. Tow up to 7,500 pounds with any of those engines.
