10 Mind-Blowing Debuts at the Geneva International Motor Show

  • Evan Williams

The Geneva Auto Show, technically the Geneva International Motor Show, is the first big European show every year. That means a big turnout of new production models from European manufacturers big and small. It's also home turf, or close to it, for many of the smaller automakers and coachbuilders.

That means far-out one-off exotics mixing it in with the latest superminis. Here are 10 of the best from this year's Geneva Auto Show.

Aston Martin Valkyrie AMR Pro

The Aston Martins Valkyrie was an absolutely epic track-day machine. No race car for the road, this was a race car for the race track. Now Aston has kicked that monster up a notch. It's the Valkyrie AMR Pro. The car uses a hybrid powertrain based around a 6.5-liter V12 that produces more than 1,100 horsepower.

The carbon bodywork and suspension help keep the car under 1,000 kg. On top of that, the car can produce 1,000 kg of downforce at speed. Even in high downforce trim, the car can hit 225 mph. It's Le Mans Prototype performance in a car that's slightly more accessible. Slightly. It will be very expensive, they're only building 25, and they're sold out.

Audi A6

[imageSource url="https://media.wheelscene.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/03/2019-audi-a6.jpg" id="13442" class="right"]

The 2019 Audi A6 midsize sedan was shown in pictures late last month, but this is the first time for public eyeballs to be foisted upon it.

The A6 launches with a pair of 3.0-liter V6 engines, one gas, one diesel - both mild hybrids. It adds active suspension and four-wheel steering to improve ride and handling, as well as help it to better handle tight European streets.

It also uses a new 10.1-inch infotainment system with an 8.6-inch screen under that to handle climate control duties.

Good Things Come In Small Packages: The Best Selling Compact Cars of 2017

  • Steven Symes

The numbers behind the best selling compact cars used to be right behind midsize cars as overall sales leaders. Times have changed, and now compact SUVs or crossovers have assumed that position. Not to mention pickups. Still, there’s money to be made in selling compact cars, so these numbers still matter.

In figuring what the best selling compact cars were for 2017, we didn’t include vehicles like the Nissan Versa, which sold quite well. It’s technically a subcompact, as is the Honda Fit, Chevrolet Spark, Hyundai Accent and other models.

Without further delay, these were the best selling compact cars in 2017.

11. Volkswagen Golf: 68,978 units sold

This mighty hatchback many drivers turn to for fun is still alive and kicking. Gone are the three-door models, because people have pretty much stopped buying them.

While that might make a few shoppers sad, the reality is the current Volkswagen Golf is still pretty amazing to drive. That big opening in the back makes it practical, too. Obviously, enough people find this combination compelling.

10. Mazda3:  75,018

[imageSource url="https://media.wheelscene.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/03/2017_Mazda3_57.jpg" id="13362" class="right"]

The Mazda3 is one of those compact cars you can still get as a sedan or a hatchback. That, and the fact that Mazda seems to put some solid zoom factor into its vehicles, makes this an attractive option.

Speaking of attraction, quite a few people are a fan of the Mazda3’s looks. SkyActiv Technology makes this a practical vehicle to own, since it’s light on the gas without adding an expensive hybrid powertrain.

Nine of the Worst Luxury Cars for Sale Right Now

  • Jason Unrau

Everyone thinks that when you’re buying a luxury car, you’re getting the best of the best. The most advanced technologies, the best looks, the best performance, and great reliability are key features. But despite paying big money for a vehicle, you could be paying for one of the worst luxury cars currently on the market.

When you’re looking for a luxury vehicle, there are some you should just avoid like Typhoid Mary. Here are nine of the worst luxury cars for sale right now.

Lincoln MKT

Dress it up however you want. Pick the upper-end Reserve trim. It doesn’t make the 2018 Lincoln MKT any easier on the eyes. It's not that it doesn't look special, it’s actually ugly. For $50,000, there are dozens of vehicles that have more curb appeal than the Lincoln MKT.

But the looks aren’t the only thing wrong with this vehicle. The interior feels disjointed and it isn’t overly spacious. It’s plenty powerful enough, with a 365-horsepower twin-turbo V6, but it’s certainly nowhere near as efficient as you might expect. Definitely, the Lincoln MKT is one of the worst luxury cars for sale right now.

Infiniti Q70

[imageSource url="https://media.wheelscene.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/02/2017_Infiniti_Q70_Premium_Select_Edition_08.jpg" id="13262" class="right"]

You have $50,000 to spend on a luxury car. Do you choose the Infiniti Q70? The car itself is pretty nice overall, with attractive looks for a sedan. It is shapely and has plenty of room inside. But the interior is less than impressive with fake-looking wood trim and an archaic manual gearshift lever. The control buttons look like something off your '90s Panasonic CD player.

The base engine for $50k large is a 330-horsepower V6, or you can choose the gas-guzzling 420-horsepower 5.6-liter V8. Instead, you might choose a $35,000-dollar Chevy Impala with 305 horsepower and spend less on therapy for your feelings of regret.

Which Truck Wins the Towing Tug-of-War Contest?

  • Chris Smith

People looking at pickups are usually interested in power, payload and towing ability. When you start talking heavy duty pickups, that last feature, the ability to pull heavy things around, is a highly desirable characteristic. To that end, there are quite a few contenders for best truck for towing.

Not everyone needs to pull the equivalent of an adult elephant and her calf behind their vehicle. Many people are just looking to tow their bass boat or jet ski. For that, any mid size truck should do the job or even a larger SUV.

But if you are in the HD market you are looking for a work truck, and lord knows what you’ll be hooking up to. To help you out with your selection,  here's the countdown to the best truck for towing.

10. Ford F-150

The best selling truck time and time again proves that switching to aluminum wasn’t such a bad idea after all.

The truck is lighter and more fuel efficient, and engine enhancements make it more effective as well. The 2018 Ford F-150 with a 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6 can be configured to tow a maximum of 13,200 pounds. It's the first light duty truck to break the 13,000-pound towing barrier.

2. Ram 2500

The key to Ram’s success in the heavy duty segment is the 6.7-liter straight-six Cummins turbo-diesel that generates 385 horsepower and 900 pound-feet of torque.

With the right configuration, this monster can hook up and move a maximum of 17,980 pounds. It’s all about the torque baby.

Best Luxury Hatchbacks for 2018: Style and Function Get Together

  • Jason Unrau

Looking cool and being functional aren’t exclusive. At least, we don’t think they should be. What's wrong with showing up in a car that looks awesome, is amazing to drive, and still has room in the back? That's exactly what the best luxury hatchback models can offer.

In the past, that was only a thing overseas, or from brands like Volvo or Audi. But for 2018, there are plenty of contenders for the best luxury hatchback. Some of these models probably wouldn't want to be called hatchbacks, given their inexpensive, millennial connotation. But we think all of these models fit the criteria.

Whether you’re making space for your Bugaboo stroller in the back or your study material for Harvard, choose one of these luxury hatchbacks.

2018 Audi A3 Sportback e-tron

Here’s a traditional hatchback, but it's almost leaning more toward a station wagon. Whatever. As long as it isn’t wood-paneled, it qualifies.

The Audi A3 Sportback has the squarish backside with a fifth door that you’ve come to expect from a hatchback. With the rear seat up, there’s 13.6 cubic feet of cargo space, but that’s expanded when the rear seats are dropped.

But it’s a luxury hatchback. So, when you’re headed to the country club, you want to be bathed in comfort. The Audi A3 Sportback e-tron is less lavish than some others but does have a panoramic sunroof, available Audi virtual cockpit, Bang & Olufsen sound, and a torquey plug-in hybrid powertrain with 204 combined horsepower. Best of all, you’ll get up to 82 mpg-e with the A3 Sportback e-tron.

2018 BMW 3 Series Gran Turismo

[imageSource url="https://media.wheelscene.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/02/P90220429_highRes_bmw-3-series-gran-tu.jpg" id="13154" class="right"]

There’s a 3 Series Sport Wagon too, but the Gran Turismo embodies a hatchback more. It really is the best of both worlds: a luxury interior with BMW power and the versatility of a hatchback. Everyone who sees the BMW kidney-shaped grille knows it’s a luxury car.

Related Search Topics (Ads)

It has available active driving assist, a fantastic head-up display, navigation, and when the rear seats are folded down up to 56.8 cubic feet of cargo-carrying capacity.

You have two powertrain options for the 2018 BMW 3 Series: a 330i with a 2.0-liter four-cylinder or a 3.0-liter, 320-horsepower turbo inline-six. Both come standard with xDrive for the Gran Turismo model and can get up to 60 mph in as little as 4.7 seconds.

Six Cars Under $30K That Can Do 60 MPH in 6 Seconds or Less

  • Chris Smith

You feel like you’re ready to channel Mario Andretti, but your new car budget is channeling Grandpa Tom’s Sunday afternoon ride. Don’t panic. You've got options when you look at the fastest cars under 30K available in 2018.

Thanks to car makers’ obsession with horsepower and torque, you can now get a sports car or a muscle car with a 0-to-60 time in 6 seconds or less for a very reasonable price.

These rides aren’t growling, gas-guzzling V8s because they don’t have to be. Technological advances in the powertrain and suspensions have turned V6s and inline-4 engines into powerhouses.

Some of these cars won't surprise you at all, aside from their low cost. Others may be vehicles that you would not expect to be blowing past you.

Are there cheaper cars that go fast? Yes, there are. But by stretching to the $30k sticker price you get more horsepower, more torque, a smarter transmission and a better tuned suspension. So, with that in mind, let’s take a look at the fastest cars under 30K.

2018 Dodge Challenger SXT

0-to-60 time: 6 seconds

This one is just a brutish, old school muscle car whose retro looks bring back the fight for bragging rights in high school for those of a certain age. Who doesn’t love a Dodge Challenger?

The Dodge Challenger has awesome big brothers that get the headlines, most certainly the Dodge Demon, which can rocket to 60 mph in just over 2 seconds. But the 3.6-liter Pentastar V6 that comes as the base engine on the Dodge Challenger SXT is no slouch at all.

Generating 305 horsepower and 268 lb-ft of torque is formidable. The Pentastar will propel the Challenger to 60 in 6 seconds. Not only that, the instrument cluster has a nifty 0-to-60 meter to track performance. You can keep trying to beat your personal best. Mostly this car is just a ton of fun to drive.

2018 Volkswagen Golf GTI

[imageSource url="https://media.wheelscene.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/02/2018_Golf_GTI-Large-6697.jpg" id="13134" class="right"]

0-to-60 time: 6 seconds

Yes, the Volkswagen Golf GTI is a hatchback, but it's a hatchback with plenty of attitude to go around. This hot hatch has a turbocharged inline 4-cylinder engine that generates 220 horsepower that is mated to a six-speed automatic.

That may not sound like much but it gets the GTI to 60 mph in 6 seconds flat. One of the secrets to this ride’s acceleration is the dual-clutch transmission that promotes performance with every shift.

It’s a VW, it’s a hatchback, it’s quick and it sells for under $27,000. We think it belongs on this list.

Get Charged Up with the 5 Best Selling Electric Cars of 2017

  • Steven Symes

Here's a run down of the best selling electric cars in 2017. Many people believe that electrification is the future of the automobile. Some automakers disagree on what form that might take, because hydrogen fuel cells are a form of electrification, if you want to get technical. While the technology for those is still young, purely electric vehicles are being held as the next big thing and electric ranges are improving.

Make no mistake: electric car sales in the United States are still nothing near what some projected eight years ago. Still, there’s no denying the importance of this growing segment. Those who pour resources into EV technology will be ahead of those that don’t.

A whole wave of new EVs will be hitting streets next year. That’s when the market will truly get interesting. But for now, let’s see what the best selling electric cars were for 2017.

BMW i3: 6,276 units

Coming in fifth place is BMW’s quirky little EV. Actually, it might be little on the outside, which is great for parking in tight spots downtown, but the interior is quite spacious. Still, it has a funky look that’s quite polarizing, but the 2018 models will have a toned-down appearance. Plus, the i3s range is in the mix for this year. Will those changes be enough for this Bimmer to rank better for 2018?

Probably not, because the 2017 models were rated at a mere 97 miles for electric-only range. Of course, you can get the i3 with a gasoline engine that acts like a generator, and that boosts range to 180 miles. That’s still not super impressive.

BMW probably won’t be too competitive in the EV space until the iNext hits the market.

Nissan Leaf: 11,230

[imageSource url="https://media.wheelscene.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/02/LEAF_LAs_Vegas_Red_Rocks__13_of_17_.jpg" id="13093" class="right"]

At one point, the Nissan Leaf was the EV to own, and it topped the sales charts. For 2017, the little hatchback claims the fourth spot. But big changes for the 2018 model year could rocket this car up higher on the results for this year. After all, the new model is cheaper and goes almost 50 miles further on a single charge.

Related Search Topics (Ads)

The 2017 Leaf electric cars aren’t exactly sexy, and they contain old tech. People shopping for EVs tend to be early adopters who want the latest and greatest of everything. Still, the 2018 model isn’t as sleek as Tesla cars, but it is quite a bit cheaper. We’ll see how that shakes out at the close of this year.

Looking for the Best Used Truck? Consider These Models

  • Steven Symes

Never buy someone else’s problem, that’s what some people say. Unfortunately, when you're looking for the best used truck, that might be what you’re doing. But there’s a big difference between buying something with a few minor problems versus a lemon that suffers chronic mechanical issues.

On top of that, you don’t want a truck that will cost too much to keep running, unless you get some benefit in return. In general, cost of ownership is far lower for smaller trucks, and midsize models come in at far less than the heavy-duty crowd. So if money is an issue, you should only go with as much truck as you actually need and will use.

Some people genuinely need a truck that can tow large items or haul heavy loads often. Others might need a truck just for smaller, occasional chores. Some may just want a commuter with a nice interior. Before you go hunting for the best used truck, honestly asses what you will use your truck to do and make your decision based on that.

We've compiled this list considering an array of factors. Ultimately, you’ll have to decide what combination of features makes the best used truck for your needs and wants.

Ford Ranger

It’s getting harder to find these little trucks, especially in good shape. People seem to hold onto them for a long time. Of course, a new version of the Ford Ranger is coming back to the US, which is only driving more interest in used models.

If you want a Ranger, the 2009 and 2010 model years are good options to consider. They both scored five out of five on J.D. Power and Associates’ dependability rating, and have only had a few recalls.

Depending on how many miles and the trim, you should expect to pay around $5,000 for a 2008 Ford Ranger. That price jumps to around $19,000 and up for a 2011 model - the last year they were made before being discontinued.

Cadillac Escalade EXT

[imageSource url="https://media.wheelscene.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/02/2012_cadillac_escalade-ext_crew-cab-pickup_premium_fq_oem_1_1280.jpg" id="13056" class="right"]

Yes, it’s a luxury pickup truck. Maybe that turns you off, but for those who want something nicer inside that can still haul and tow, this could be an excellent fit. J.D. Power & Associates gave the 2009 and 2011 model years a five out of five dependability rating, which should mean something.

Related Search Topics (Ads)

The biggest difference between this and other pickups is the midgate. You can expand the bed into the backseat area, if needed, which helps when loading longer items. Some people are a fan of this, while others don’t care for the feature.

If you want something less pretentious, choose the Chevrolet Avalanche. It comes with the same functionality, and is virtually the same mechanically.

A 2013 Cadillac Escalade EXT with around 60,000 miles should run around $40,000 for the Premium trim, around $36,000 for the Luxury trim. Expect to pay between $15,000 and $20,000 for a 2008 model, depending on miles and trim.

10 of the Coolest Cars, Trucks and SUVs from The Chicago Auto Show

  • Evan Williams

The Chicago Auto Show isn't the biggest show of the year, but it's traditionally still an important one. It's usually the home of launches for new trucks, vans and SUVs.

This year the Chicago Auto Show is a little low on new vehicles, but that doesn't mean that there weren't some cool cars, trucks and SUVs being shown for the first time. So here are the 10 coolest releases from the 2018 Chicago Auto Show.

Nissan 370Zki

Nissan loves the snow. Last year, the automaker added tracks to the Murano and Rogue SUVs. This year, it was time for a sports car.

Nissan added tracks to the rear and skis to the front of a Nissan 370Z to make the 370Zki. Say it. 370-Ski. You get the idea. It's a sports car turned 332-horsepower snowmobile. And it's a roadster, because convertibles are always better. Even in the snow. Before the Chicago Auto Show appearance, Nissan tested the car on Wyoming ski slopes.

They May Not Sip, But These 10 Pickups Don’t Gulp the Gas

  • Steven Symes

Let’s face it, fuel efficient trucks are like double-dipping. They can tow and haul stuff, and they won’t chew up as much money from day to day. Stopping constantly to fill up a giant tank can get expensive and old after a while, which is why customers are demanding more fuel efficient trucks.

Trucks these days come in a wide variety of powerplants, so in a few instances you'll see the same truck appear twice, only with different engines. Also, some of these numbers depend on whether the pickup is 2WD and the size of the cab. So with that said, here's a list of fuel efficient trucks for 2018 models.

Ram 1500

17/25 mpg city/highway: Pentastar 3.6-liter V6

If you want a big truck to take on big jobs, this is one of the few that will provide decent fuel economy. Sadly, 17 mpg in the city isn’t anything to get worked up over for most vehicles, but most can’t do what the Ram 1500 can. With the Pentastar 3.6-liter V6 under the hood, this truck can tow over 4,700 pounds, so taking along some campers, trailers and boats is not a problem.

You also get a nice, big bed for hauling whatever. And you can add the RamBox cargo areas in the bed rails, which are an incredibly cool solution.

Chevrolet Silverado

18/24 mpg: 4.3-liter V6

With the 4.3-liter EcoTec V6, the Chevy Silverado is another full size truck with decent fuel economy. Peak torque output comes in at 305 lb-ft, while 285 horsepower is all right. Of course, this pickup has been designed to tow and haul, with equipment like an external engine oil cooler and an exterior transmission oil cooler.

All Silverado pickups come with that cool CornerStep rear bumper, which makes climbing up to get something in the payload without lowering the tailgate easy and safe. You can also get 4G LTE mobile WiFi in the truck, so pretty much everywhere there’s a high-speed internet connection.

As an option with the 5.3L EcoTec3 V8 engine, you can also get your Chevrolet Silverado paired with a mild hybrid system capable of similar fuel economy.
