Need for Speed: The 10 Fastest Street Legal Motorcycles

  • Chris Stephensen

If you're looking for some speed, you're looking for the fastest motorcycle that can legally hit the pavement. Sometimes after a long week of stop and go commuting, averaging 45 miles per hour, you need real speed. We understand.

Instead of spending the weekend raking the lawn or painting the shutters, it’s time to embrace your inner Red Rocker, let your hair down, and bring out your bike.

Here are 10 contenders for fastest motorcycle for those who really feel the need - the need for speed.

Suzuki Hayabusa

Let’s start this list with the most famous of all the street demons. As the subject of countless drag races and YouTube police chase videos, the Suzuki Hayabusa's performance is well known.

A top speed of 186 mph and a 0-60 time at 2.6 seconds are much more than you’ll ever need, not that it’s stopped anyone before. Largely keeping to the same formula since its introduction in ’99, the Hayabusa still gives some of the best performance per dollar around.

MV Agusta F4 RR

[imageSource url="https://media.wheelscene.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/06/MVAugustaF4RR.jpg" id="8748" class="right"]

The current iteration of MV Agusta has only existed for a couple of decades, but that doesn’t mean they don’t know how to build fast bikes. You get 201 horsepower from a 1,000cc hemispherical (like what made Mopar, well, Mopar) powerplant. But a stat like that doesn’t mean much unless the bike can walk the walk.

Related Search Topics (Ads)

With a top speed a tick under the Hayabusa’s at 185 mph and a quarter mile blown away in under 10 seconds, you won’t be left wondering whether the 418 pounds dry the F4 RR carries will slow you down. And with a price tag north of $26,000, you wallet won’t weigh you down either.

The 5 Best, and Cheap, First Try Project Cars

  • Chris Smith

If this is your first vehicle restoration, there are a few things you want to keep in mind when looking for the best project cars. In the words of Dirty Harry, "a man has to know his limitations."

There's typically more to completing a project car than mechanical know how. Metal work, welding, painting and other skill sets that you probably will have to farm out may be required.

It's going to take longer than you think it will and it will cost more than planned. Don't get discouraged, because the end result will be worth it.

Generally speaking your first project car ought to be one that runs. Never buy an incomplete car. "Perfect condition, just add a transmission" type of ads are a dead giveaway for problems ahead.

Price is also a consideration, of course. All the cars on this list can be found for under $7,000. The more "value" you can buy, the less work and expense you'll have in the project.

So make sure you've got the right tools in your garage and let's get started. These are some of the best project cars. Some of these old RWD rides are going to surprise you. But once you see these and see the possibilities, we think you'll get excited.

1979 - 1993 Ford Mustang

Yeah, everybody has one. But there is a reason why. Ford built a ton of them, so there is a good used inventory. And if you buy one made after 1987, you are getting the advantage of more effective fuel and air flow.

These rides are lightweight, in relatively abundant supply and have more support forums than most other brands. Toss in the fact that the aftermarket for Mustangs is massive and you have one of the project cars that's halfway home when you buy it. Expect to pay somewhere between $1,500 and $5,000 for your pony.

1965 - 1970 Chevrolet Impala

[imageSource url="https://media.wheelscene.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/05/ChevroletImpala.jpg" id="8714" class="right"]

Yes the Impala is a big honking car. Chevy sold over 1 million of them in 1965 alone. They are big, they are good looking, and if you can get a good deal, they make perfect classic car restoration projects.

Related Search Topics (Ads)

Granted these behemoths will not carve up curves but you can shred rubber in the straightaway. Why? Because these sedans came with monster engines. The rumbling, thundering L-88 is a 427 cubic-inch big block V8.

Also in the lineup of Impala power plants are an array of small block V8s and of course the monster 452 cubic-inch big block that replaced the L-88. There is a fairly large support community and parts are relatively easy to come by, so it's definitely one of the best project cars. An Impala without a big block engine should run between $1,500 and $7,000.

How Do You Choose? These Are the 15 Best Midsize SUVs and Crossovers

  • Jason Unrau

Trying to find the best midsize SUV or crossover is a difficult task. With more than 60 models to choose from under $40,000, you may need some help narrowing down your choice to just one.

Here are 15 great candidates for the best midsize SUV or crossover, loosely ranked based on subjective criteria.

15. Lexus NX

Really, it’s a luxury cute-ute. The Lexus NX Turbo/NX Turbo F Sport, and NX 300h are essentially the same vehicles with differences in the powertrain. The powertrain is solid, which earns its place on the list. The NX Turbo and NX Turbo F Sport both use the 2.0-liter turbo four-banger with 235 horsepower, zipping this little doodah along with a little pep. The NX 300h hybrid powertrain jacks up the efficiency factor while dumbing down the power to 194 combined hp. The turbo versions are available in FWD and AWD; the hybrid is only AWD.

Inside, you get the typical premium treatment you’d expect from a Lexus. Neat features like the remote touchpad, wireless charging and Lexus Enform are great and all. Intuitive Parking Assist keeps you from playing bumper cars in the parking lot. But the interior is a little drab and the Lexus price point doesn’t quite match up with the rest.

14. Ford Edge

[imageSource url="https://media.wheelscene.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/05/FordEdge-1.jpg" id="8675" class="right"]

It’s all about the toys in the Ford Edge. For years, the Ford Edge has been a go-to vehicle for middle-aged families, but Ford is looking to change that. The new Edge has updated looks that are younger and more striking, but the real attraction is in the cabin. Available SYNC 3, available Adaptive Cruise Control, available Enhanced Active Park Assist, available Adaptive Steering. All the good stuff is available on the Edge…but not standard.

Related Search Topics (Ads)

The base Ford Edge feels stripped down with empty gaps where buttons and features should be. But if you choose an upper trim, you’ll be quite satisfied with the tech options. Also, the 2.7-liter EcoBoost engine ain’t bad. But if you can, opt for the 3.5-liter V6 or the 2.0-liter turbocharged EcoBoost engine for a fun drive.

The looks are boring and disappointing, and it feels like you’re driving a minivan at times. That said, it’s still a great SUV.

Modern Muscle Cars: These Beasts Are Keeping the Faith

  • Steven Symes

If you’re looking for hardcore muscle, but you don’t want to deal with the fun of carbureted engines and a severe lack of ABS brakes, these five modern muscle cars are great.

First off, we must define what is and is not a muscle car. While some might argue otherwise, we’re going to say muscle cars only have two doors. There is a backseat, so the Corvette and Viper don’t qualify. That does throw out quite a few powerful, fun vehicles.

Also, muscle cars lay it down with loads of power. Sure, some handle quite well, but big power is an absolute must. Admittedly, that doesn’t leave too many vehicles. What you get, though, are some truly fantastic cars that will transform any road run into a pulse-pounding adventure.

Ford Mustang Shelby GT350

All you need to do is hear the flat-plane crack 5.2-liter V8 engine wail at wide open throttle to know why this car is special. Sure, such a powerplant isn’t exactly traditional for a muscle car. Neither is the fact the GT350 can stick turns like it’s glued to the road.

At a peak 526 horsepower, this is the most powerful naturally aspirated Ford ever made. The engine revs all the way to 8,250 rpm, and makes a wonderful symphony all the way there. Just try driving this car and not feel like you’re wrangling a wicked beast, you can't.

Dodge Challenger SRT Demon

[imageSource url="https://media.wheelscene.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/05/DodgeChallengerSRTDemon.jpg" id="8612" class="right"]

How could this car not end up on the list of modern muscle cars? The Dodge Challenger is a great modern muscle car, and the Demon pushes it to an extreme level. You can get this car with just one seat, proving it’s all about going way fast in a straight line, plus big bravado. The whole thing is a big hat tip to muscle cars of old.

Related Search Topics (Ads)

You probably know the Demon uses a supercharged 6.2-liter Hemi V8 engine, with a nice little demon icon on the cover. Feeding a ample supply of cool air is a super wide Air-Grabber hood scoop. The Torque Reserve Launch System helps ensure you’re not embarrassed by people with lesser vehicles at the track.

Acceleration is brutal, with 0 to 60 taking just 2.3 seconds. It does the quarter mile in 9.65 seconds. No other production car can do a wheelie. Sure, it won’t slalom worth crap, but that’s not the point of this modern muscle car.

Hold Onto Your Hats: It’s the Best Performance Cars of 2017

  • Jason Unrau

People are going to describe the best performance cars in different terms. Some think that the highest horsepower means it’s the best performance car. Others only consider exotic brands to be among the best. And others feel that true performance is found in domestic muscle with few exceptions. Then there are people who want a driver’s car, something that combines power and handling.

Because it’s different strokes for different folks, these best performance cars aren’t going to be ranked. Think of it as a suggestion list if you want to have a blast behind the wheel of a car. One thing you can guarantee: each car earns its place on the list one way or another.

2017 Jaguar F-Type SVR

There are only flashes of the snobby attitude Jaguar gives off with most of its cars. The F-Type is a different animal, focusing on performance more than just giving an air of snootiness. The Jaguar F-Type SVR is a front-engine 5.0-liter supercharged V8 that winds up 575 horsepower and 516 lb-ft of torque, so AWD is used to keep it all under control. Acceleration from 0 to 60 is 3.0 seconds flat, and that’s middle of the pack for our list.

What you did not expect is that the F-Type still has a rather soft suspension. That gives you the option to throw it around a bit, but it feels less controlled than some other models. A roaring exhaust sounds fantastic but can get a little annoying sooner rather than later. And yes, there are still some pretentious quirks inside, but you’ll get over them quickly.

2017 Acura NSX

[imageSource url="https://media.wheelscene.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/05/AcuraNSX.jpg" id="8605" class="right"]

Now this is quite a car. Perhaps the most well-rounded of the best performance cars, the NSX can do pretty much anything. From a standstill, it can chirp all four tires when you hit the gas in Sport Plus mode. When you get into corners, it can hold them better than virtually any other competitor. It’s been compared to a Porsche 918 but better, and that’s all without engaging Launch mode.

Related Search Topics (Ads)

The 2017 Acura NSX has a beastly 573 horsepower and 476 lb-ft of torque from its hybrid 3.5-liter twin-turbo mid-engine powertrain, and two electric motors power the front wheels for AWD. 3.1 seconds is its 0-to-60 time, which is good enough for us.

Can’t Let Go: Cars People Keep the Longest

  • Chris Smith

We're keeping our cars longer, but what are the cars people keep the longest?

There was a time when Americans liked to change out cars every three years. Of course that was back in the days when the average car loan was 36 months and the cars didn't last much longer than five years.

Today consumers tend to hang on to their rides longer (7.2 years according to one study). Quality is way up and so is the financial commitment. But even taking these factors into consideration, there is a group of vehicles that owners tend to keep for an inordinate amount of time.

Why? What's so special about these rides that owners are so reluctant to part with them?

The website iSeeCars.com does a comprehensive study each year of vehicles sold to see which cars people keep the longest before selling or trading in. For 2017, researchers sifted through 16 million cars to see which had the best track records with their sellers.

The results are something of a mixed bag but you know when an owner hangs onto a car for nearly 10 years there's something special going on.

Here in no particular order are 10 cars people keep the longest.

Audi TT

This one might not be so surprising. This highly rated luxury coupe/convertible was introduced in 2000 and went through a complete redesign in 2006.

Accolades include a truly luxurious interior, smart exterior design, and with the addition of all wheel drive, the TT can claim snappy, sporty handling. On average, owners enjoy their Audi TT for eight and half years before saying goodbye.

Toyota 4Runner

[imageSource url="https://media.wheelscene.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/05/Toyota4Runner.jpg" id="8581" class="right"]

This SUV can almost claim legendary status. When you consistently get stellar reliability ratings from Consumer Reports and show up on a list of cars that last 200,000 miles or more, odds are you are doing something right.

Related Search Topics (Ads)

Reliability is a key "keeper" factor for SUV owners and the 4Runner has reliability in spades. iSeeCars.com data shows that 4Runner owners keep their rides an average of 8.8 years.

Putting on Airs: The Most Affordable Luxury Cars

  • Steven Symes

You don’t have to drop a ton of cash on these affordable luxury cars. Sure, people will be impressed when you pull up to the country club behind the wheel of a new S-Class or Model X. But what if you don’t belong to a country club or care what people think?

After all, owning a luxury car can be about more than impressing others. It can be about getting amazing quality and amenities you just don’t see on other cars. So, if you’re not looking to break the bank, but want those advantages and more, read on.

To be perfectly, honest, some of these cars will cost more than others to maintain. But here are some of the most affordable luxury cars out there, before you take them to the shop.

Jaguar XE

I know, you think you can’t afford a Jaguar. It’s not that the XE is expensive, because this cat only starts at $35,725. Instead, it’s the maintenance costs that concern most people.

That’s understandable, because Jaguar doesn’t have the most stellar reputation in that department. The company and owners claim things have been changing in big way recently. You must decide if you trust that or not.

Climb inside the XE and you’ll see why people rave about British craftsmanship. It doesn’t feel German, but it certainly rivals if not exceeds what you get with those brands. You also enjoy some great technologies standard, like an eight-inch touchscreen and push-button ignition. If you want to pay to upgrade, a heads-up display, 10.2-inch touchscreen, onboard WiFi, and two amazing Meridian sound systems are available.

Cadillac ATS

[imageSource url="https://media.wheelscene.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/05/CadillacATS.jpg" id="8553" class="right"]

Don’t pass up Cadillac because you think the designs are too garish. The new ATS looks smoother and cleaner than ever, plus it’s a tremendous value. Everyone in the luxury market talks about taking the fight to the Germans, but Cadillac has done it with the ATS. Instead of making you pay a ton for such a finely crafted vehicle, you can get a coupe starting at just $34,595.

Related Search Topics (Ads)

If you want to spend more and get a wildly powerful engine, plus the super-smooth Magnetic Ride Control suspension, you can. But the base ATS is a blast to drive, especially with 295 lb-ft of torque at your command and a chassis that’s rigid but not punishing.

Getting That Recent Grad a New Car? Here’s Some Ideas

  • Jason Unrau

The best cars for teens often don't coincide with the cars they actually want. Let’s look at the most popular cars for teenagers from the parents’ perspectives, then from the kids' point of view, before all these recent grads head off to college.

Best Cars for Teens: Being Practical

Toyota Corolla

This has been a staple in college and university parking lots for decades, literally. The Toyota Corolla is a fuel-saving, dependable and practical compact sedan. It has tons of space for the luggage needed to get to college. It also has the relaxed personality that tells a parent that their "child" won’t be out roadtripping to the Vegas strip every weekend with their buddies.

The modern Corolla has a sportier attitude than ever, so it’s not horribly uncool. And the student savings account won’t drain quickly either, because 36 mpg highway and 28 mpg city are quite efficient. A 1.8-liter 4-cylinder with VVT is spunky enough to go to study group, and not too much more.

Volkswagen Golf

[imageSource url="https://media.wheelscene.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/05/VWGolf.jpg" id="8490" class="right"]

The VW Golf is a good blend of function and frugality. Even though its stubby tail end makes it look tiny, the Golf has over 52 cu. ft. of cargo space. There’s room for four adults inside the car as you travel from the dorm to town. The interior is quirky enough to satisfy an academic student and toned down enough to make a parent comfortable.

Related Search Topics (Ads)

A turbocharged 1.8-liter gas engine is found in the Volkswagen Golf. Although it’s small, it packs a decent punch of 170 horsepower. Great for the city and highway, and reliable enough that there’s no excuse NOT to come home on school breaks and weekends. It's definitely one of the best cars for teens.

These VW Concept Cars Are an Enthusiast’s Dream

  • Robbie Clark

Volkswagen is unveiling its new fleet of VW concept cars at SOWO: The European Experience.

Featuring five models from the brand lineup, these specially prepared show cars are the result of the diverse interests of Volkswagen enthusiasts. Let's have a look at these VW concept cars.

Beetle Post Concept

This VW concept car showcases the top Beetle R-Line trim, as well as championship-winning BMX rider, Alise Post. Post has outfitted the car with two custom GW bikes for Beetle Post Concept project.

The car rides on 19-inch Mr. Drama Queen wheels from an up-and-coming company, Radi8, and uses an H&R Springs Street Performance Coil Over system that lowers the stance and highlights the performance potential of the Beetle.

Jetta GLI Nardo Concept

[imageSource url="https://media.wheelscene.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/05/JettaGLINardoConcept.jpg" id="8467" class="right"]

The GLI is something of a stealth performance car, and the Nardo Concept builds on this reputation. A few simple touches really make the car pop. The GLI has been a staple VW brand since the Mark 2 generation of the Jetta.

Nardo Grey covers the car. It's a popular color at sister brand Audi, and it brings out the lines without looking flashy. The Nardo has an H&R Springs Street Performance Coil Over system and BFGoodrich G-Force Comp-2 A/S tires for a more road-hugging appearance.

Finding  the best motorcycles for tall riders isn’t the easiest task in the world. Many bikes are designed for those on the shorter end of the tape measure.

Despite current development trends though, there are still bikes that fit the taller among us with ease. Here’s a handful of the best motorcycles for tall riders.

BMW R1200GS

Adventure bikes are some of the best motorcycles for tall riders. Their upright seating positions and ergonomics developed for long road trips make these comfortable choices on the road. A generous 33- or 35-inch seat height leaves plenty of room to let the legs stretch out.

Distance from the ground to the seat is only one aspect of feeling comfortable on the bike. Luckily, the R1200GS also has a cloud for a seat, and smart handlebar design keeps fatigue from creeping in too soon. A 130 mph top speed will make sure you get where you’re going.

This is a go-anywhere bike which regularly experiences all corners of the globe, carrying people of all shapes and sizes. It’s more than capable enough to handle your larger frame on the evening commute.

Ducati Multistrada

Another adventure bike, but unlike the Beamer, Ducati’s upright tourer is asphalt-focused. So while it might not be designed to go the long way round, or down, most riders keep to the pavement as it is.

This environment is where the Italian bike shines. Available in both 950 and 1200cc displacement, it’s the 1200 that makes heads turn and crowds flock.

Possibly the most tech-focused adventure-tourer, the papa Multi includes a six-axis Inertial Measurement Unit which supports in-corner ABS control to improve traction, stability and performance.

Seat height is comparable to the Beamer's at 32 inches. With a wet weight of just over 500 lbs, the Ducati is incredibly nimble, and the 160 horsepower powerplant means you won’t be left behind. Just be careful if it's raining.

Combining comfort for larger riders and an immensely playful attitude makes the Ducati Multistrada one of the best motorcycles for tall riders.
