8 Trucks We Wish We Could Get in the United States

  • Jason Unrau

Pickup trucks are a hot market in North America. With SUVs and trucks increasing in their share of sales year over year, you’d expect to see more variety on the streets. But alas, there are still some models of trucks not sold in America.

There’s a world of trucks out there – specifically, small and midsize trucks – that we wish we could get in the United States. There are a lot of reasons why they aren't available in the United States. But rest assured, if it made economic sense for the manufacturers, they would be on lots right now.

One of the biggest reasons is something called the "chicken tax." Back in the '60s, as a response to foreign tariffs on American chicken exports, the United States government slapped a hefty tariff on imported light trucks, among other things. So hefty, it isn't cost effective for foreign auto manufacturers to bring their trucks over here.

Automakers could, in theory, manufacture these trucks in the United States to avoid the tariff, but again this doesn't make much economic sense. Companies would have to build entirely new facilities, or completely overhaul their current plants, to produce these new trucks. Moreover, the profit margin is much thinner with small trucks compared to full-size pickups.

What's more, why would they want to build something that American consumers just doesn't have much taste for? But tastes could be changing, or auto makers are willing to test the waters at least. Ford, for one, has announced plans to bring back the compact Ford Ranger to the American market after being discontinued in 2011.

Who knows, maybe some of these other trucks not sold in America right now will get a shot one day. Until then, here's a look at some of the other trucks available around the world.

Mitsubishi Triton

This has been one of the most popular midsize trucks for nearly four decades. Known by many other names in the past including the well-known L200 name, the Triton is a rock-solid pickup and one of the largest personal vehicles on the roads in many foreign countries. It’s powered by a 2.4-liter turbo-diesel engine with 188 horsepower.

The engine might be a reason it’s not coming to the U.S., as buyers prefer gas. It could also be because of a 25 percent chicken tax if it were imported. But most importantly, the Triton or L200 won’t be coming because the Jeep Wrangler pickup is on its way.

Toyota Hilux

[imageSource url="https://media.wheelscene.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/01/hilux.jpg" id="12680" class="right"]

The Toyota Hilux name has been around since 1968. It used to be available in the U.S. with an engine that made 84 to 109 horsepower, depending on the year. It morphed into the 4Runner and then was discontinued as a pickup when the Tacoma arrived in 1995, but the Hilux was never abandoned in other parts of the world.

Today, the Toyota Hilux enjoys immense popularity around the globe. It looks sharp with available box stanchions and has basic but thorough hardcore off-roading packages available. And it no longer resembles the Tacoma.

Selling More Style: The 10 Best Selling Luxury SUVs of 2017

  • Jason Unrau

In the past 12 months, passenger car sales have continued to drop as more drivers moved to trucks and SUVs. Buyers aren’t shy about spending more money either, as the best selling luxury SUVs prove. It seems that luxury SUVS have been a hot commodity with many models seeing increases and few dropping in volume.

It’s the soothing feeling of leather on your backside, the quieter interior experience, the better fit and finish inside, and the performance you get for your money. These are the 10 best selling luxury SUVs of 2017.

10. Buick Enclave: 48,564 units sold

[imageSource url="https://media.wheelscene.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/01/2018-Buick-Enclave-033.jpg" id="12625" class="right"]

The 2018 Buick Enclave is all-new, and it’s coming on the heels of a rather successful first generation. It was essentially a luxury version of the Chevrolet Traverse. While it may not be the sexiest of the best selling luxury SUVs, it’s still a much more attractive vehicle than its budget-conscious sibling.

The new 2018 Buick Enclave has the prestige Avenir trim for the first time, has three rows of seating, and has an amazingly fluid, pleasant interior. A 310-horsepower 3.6-liter V6 is under the hood of each trim, along with a 9-speed auto transmission. Wireless charging, Buick IntelliLink and a perfect-performing Continuously Variable Real-Time Damping are standout features for the Enclave.

In its changeover year, the Enclave dropped in sales from 52,028 to 48,564. That’s a decrease of 6.7 percent, but this full year of sales should see a significant boost.

9. Mercedes-Benz GLC Class: 48,643

[imageSource url="https://media.wheelscene.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/01/2018_mercedes-benz_glc-class_4dr-suv_amg-glc-43_fq_oem_3_1280.jpg" id="12624" class="right"]

The GLC Class remained steady in sales. Introduced in 2015, it immediately drew attention for its position in the market and made its way onto the list of best selling luxury SUVs. It’s a competitively priced, well-equipped compact SUV with a wide range of trims.

The GLC Class is available in the basic form as a GLC 300 with 242 horsepower, a 503-horsepower AMG-powered V8, or a few models in between. With features like rear-door sunshades, a massive Panorama roof, Air Body Control and driver-assistive technology, it’s one of the best selling luxury SUVs to keep your eyes on.

In 2016, the Mercedes-Benz GLC Class sold 47,872 times. In 2017, there was a slight up tick to 48,643, an increase of 1.6 percent.

These Are the Best Selling SUVs in the US for 2017

  • Evan Williams

Another year of sales and another year of big market share increases for SUVs and crossovers. The popular high-riding vehicles climbed 2.5 percentage points to make up 42-percent of the entire auto market in 2017. With that overall increase, five of the 10 best selling SUVs had double-digit sales increases.

So let's take a look back at the 10 best selling SUVs of 2017.

10. Subaru Outback: 188,886 sold

The Subaru Outback was one of the pioneering crossovers. It started life as a Legacy wagon and then got extra rugged cladding, a higher ride height and other SUV-like touches. Now it has taken over and the Legacy wagon is no longer offered.

The Outback offers good visibility, a higher seat for easy entry, and ample cargo space. Subaru's all-wheel drive offers excellent traction in all weather. A 2.5-liter flat-four offers good fuel economy for the class and an available 3.6-liter flat-six offers 256 horsepower. For 2017, sales were up nearly 6,000 units from 2016.

9. Jeep Wrangler: 190,522

[imageSource url="https://media.wheelscene.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/01/JP017_019WRgk1lj52tdbo86tt19f1bqui3p7.jpg" id="12576" class="right"]

The Jeep Wrangler was the only vehicle on our list of best selling SUVS to see a sales decline for 2017. However it may be a victim of its own popularity. For most of the year, teases and hints of an all-new model covered the internet. That new model was revealed near the end of the year and it's possible buyers were waiting for it. It was also a small decrease, seeing just 1,252 fewer Wranglers sold.

The Wrangler is one of the most capable SUVs off road of any on the market. The new model offers more comfort, more open-roof options, and a pair of engines - a 2.0-liter turbo-four and a 3.6-liter V6.

10 Vehicles You Don’t Want to Miss at the 2018 Detroit Auto Show

  • Jason Unrau

Every year the NAIAS in Detroit showcases concepts, prototypes and new models set to roll out soon. And every year, the Detroit Auto Show garners a ton of attention from all aspects of the automotive industry. With some prototypes, manufacturers are testing the waters to see if the public likes them. With others, it’s a way to catch consumers’ eyes ahead of the launch.

Some models at the 2018 NAIAS stand out from the crowd. Whether you plan to attend the show or not, you can see 10 of the hottest models from the 2018 Detroit Auto Show right here.

2019 Ford Mustang Bullitt

Honestly, how can you go the NAIAS and not look at the Mustang on display? You have to check out the 2019 Ford Mustang Bullitt. Attempting to mimic the ’68 Mustang in the Steve McQueen movie "Bullitt," this next-gen Mustang coupe has the looks and the muscle to pull it off.

The nearly badge-less exterior is sexy, complete with a fastback style reminiscent of the late-'60s era. Packed under the bonnet is a 475-horsepwer 5.0-liter V8 with the ability to reach 163mph. You have the choice of Shadow Black or the original Highland Green paint on this pony car.

GAC Motor EV Concept

[imageSource url="https://media.wheelscene.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/01/enverge.jpg" id="12557" class="right"]

This year, the North American auto market will see Chinese automaker GAC for the first time. They’ve brought a show-stopper of a vehicle to park on their welcome mat at the Detroit Auto Show. It’s an EV concept known as Enverge, and it’s a love-it-or-hate-it design.

It looks outlandish and futuristic, incorporating cameras in place of side mirrors and butterfly doors. It is said to travel 370 miles on a charge.

This isn’t the only model that will arrive in North America, though. The GAC GS8 crossover SUV with three rows of seating, a four-cylinder engine and a six-speed transmission will also hit US streets.

The 5 Biggest Winners and Losers of 2017 for Vehicle Sales

  • Jason Unrau

What an interesting year 2017 was for vehicle sales. Predictions about the increase in SUV and truck sales proved to be true. Luxury cars were trending, not just trendy. Electric cars strolled into the mainstream and drew everyone’s attention.

Of course, vehicles like the Ford F-Series, Chevy Silverado and Ram Trucks stayed at the top of the sales charts based on units sold. The Nissan Rogue climbed its way into fifth spot in the US on an impressive 22.3 percent gain. It’s a winner for 2017 for sure.

There were other models that made even more significant year-over-year sales increases in 2017. And there were those who didn’t fare so well. These are the five biggest winners and losers of 2017 in vehicle sales with full sales years in both 2016 and 2017.

Who’s Hot: Greatest Percentage Increase in Vehicle Sales

Mazda CX-9: 61 percent increase in sales

The old, tired first-gen Mazda CX-9 left after the 2015 model year, and a svelte, competitive new vehicle took its place in 2016. The CX-9 ditched the faux-minivan appearance for a hot midsize SUV look that turns heads, not stomachs. A 2.5-liter SkyActiv-G gas engine with up to 250 horsepower is standard, and driver-assistive tech is available in the CX-9 for the first time.

The Mazda CX-9 rose 60.9 percent in U.S. sales overall from 2016 to 2017. It tallied 16,051 units in ’16, then climbed to 25,828 in ’17.

Tesla Model X: 67 percent increase

[imageSource url="https://media.wheelscene.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/01/tesla-model-x-1.jpg" id="12507" class="right"]

With electric car sales booming, you’d expect at least one on the list, but probably not the high-priced Tesla Model X. Yet here it is, boasting a phenomenal jump in sales. The Model X is what you’d consider modern luxury, it has Autopilot capabilities, fantastic leather seating, technological integration for audio, connectivity, HVAC and much more.

The Tesla Model X was an outlier that sold just 14,400 units in 2016. That number went up to 24,000 in 2017, an increase of 66.7 percent year over year.

The Best Selling Luxury Cars on U.S. Streets

  • Steven Symes

Let’s just face it, the best selling luxury cars aren't putting up the numbers they used to. Back in the day, automakers lived and died by how well their sedans fared in the market.

While they’re still important, the surge in demand for crossovers has definitely diminished the magic of sedans in general. That’s true for luxury sales, where people still want at least the perception of utility. Thanks to this increased competition, automakers are spicing up their luxury sedans more than ever, which is a big win for anyone who prefers a trunk over a tailgate.

Following are the top 10 best selling luxury cars, ranked by sales figures for 2017.

Lincoln MKZ: 27,387 cars sold

Edging out the Lexus IS by just under 1,000 sales, Lincoln’s midsize luxury sedan makes an appearance on this list. It achieved 27,387 sales for 2017, down from 30,534 for the previous year. That is a 10.3 percent drop.

Lincoln freshened up the exterior and interior for the 2017 model year. It also introduced an optional 400-horsepower engine to generate some excitement. Draw your own conclusions about how effective those moves were.

Tesla Model S: 28,800

[imageSource url="https://media.wheelscene.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/01/model-s-1.jpg" id="12462" class="right"]

At one point, people tried to claim this fully electric sedan was the best selling luxury car in America. As you can clearly see, for 2017 that just isn’t the case. Nevertheless, the Model S still had a strong showing with 28,800 sales for the No. 9 spot on this list. It’s worth noting that total was 9.1 percent higher than sales for 2016.

Related Search Topics (Ads)

Arguably, the Model X electric crossover ate into Model S sales, which is just the industry trend. For 2018, it’s possible the Model 3 will erode Model S sales further, but we’ll see.

The Best Compact SUVs for 2018 Are Big on Features and Value

  • Evan Williams

Compact SUVs are for buyers who need seating for four (or five in a pinch) and the stuff to go with them. But the best compact SUV models have more than just space. They are loaded with safety tech and other features. Some are even fun to drive.

But despite the small name, these compact SUVs are hardly small. They aren't the tiny tin cans the compact name implies. They're small in stature, but big on features, capability, fuel economy and value. It's a crowded segment, but here are 10 of the best compact SUV models for 2018.

2018 Volkswagen Tiguan

Volkswagen introduced the all-new second-generation Tiguan in late 2017. It's a much bigger vehicle than the last one. So much bigger that it's now an SUV with three rows of seating.

While the seats are too snug for most adults, they're fine for kids. The bigger VW Tiguan gets more cargo space as well. If you don't want the optional third row, you get even more space in the back. The new 2.0-liter turbocharged engine delivers less power than last year, but has increased fuel economy.

2018 Ford Escape

[imageSource url="https://media.wheelscene.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/01/18_FRD_ESc_107_tnm.tif.jpg" id="12359" class="right"]

The Ford Escape offers up lots of variety. There are three engines to pick from, including a 2.5-liter naturally aspirated four-cylinder and a pair of turbocharged engines in 1.5-liter and 2.0-liter form. The latter offers 245 horsepower making the Ford Escape one of the quickest SUVs in its class.

The 34.0 cubic feet of cargo space behind the second row makes it one of the biggest in the class too. You also get Ford's Sync3 connectivity system with Apple Carplay and Android Auto on a big touchscreen.

Range Anxiety: Which 2018 EVs Can Go the Farthest

  • Robbie Clark

Range anxiety is one of the two major roadblocks preventing electric cars from taking over the automotive market. The other of course is the amount of time it takes to “refuel.” Finding the longest range electric car would alleviate some of that apprehension. Electric cars with a 200 mile range tend to be the average these days, here we have an electric car range comparison.

The industry is responding to range anxiety with promises of more efficient batteries and other technological advances that will make EV range equivalent to gas engine vehicles. Everybody has promises of great things to come. So many promises that it almost sounds like they are making excuses for the EVs they make today.

For those buyers that are interested in buying in the here and now, here are the longest range electric car models for 2017 and 2018. So, what is the longest distance an electric car can go?

2017 Hyundai Ioniq Electric: 124 miles

We are including this 2017 model only because Hyundai promises that the 2018 version will have a range of 200 miles and be available nationwide. However, currently this EV is only sold in California. Also, there is no firm launch date for the long-range Ioniq model.

Never the less, as a 2017 model, 124 miles was a pretty good range. Given the number of competitors that are shooting at 200, that 2017 number is becoming a drawback rather than a benefit. Hyundai does have pricing going for it though with one of the lowest cost base units at $29,600.

2018 Volkswagen e-Golf: 125 miles

[imageSource url="https://media.wheelscene.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/01/2017_e-Golf-Large-6761.jpg" id="12313" class="right"]

Volkswagen upgraded the 2017 model year e-Golf. The nondescript hatchback now offers up a 125-mile range on a single charge. That's up from 84 miles, and it is a considerable improvement.

Related Search Topics (Ads)

With a 240-volt charging station, drivers can charge the e-Golf in less than six hours. According to VW, when equipped with DC Fast Charging, which is optional on the base but standard on premium trims, the battery can be charged to 80 percent within an hour at a DC Fast Charging Station.

Check Out the Coolest Cars and Car Tech from CES 2018

  • Evan Williams

CES 2018 is in full swing until the end of this week in Las Vegas, Nevada. The Consumer Electronics Show is the world's largest show of consumer tech. From 8K TVs to connected coffee makers, if it's the latest gadget for your home it'll be here.

In the last few years, more and more in-car tech has come to CES. Some automakers are even using this show to launch new models. Here's the best car-related tech, and cars, from this year's CES.

Fisker EMotion

Henrik Fisker is once again trying to bring an electric car to market. It's not the first time he's tried, nor the first company he's tried to do that with. This time, it's the Fisker EMotion. Among the claims are 400 miles on a single charge, a top speed of 161 mph, and arrival to the market at the end of next year.

Say what you want about the production chances of the car, but there is no arguing that it looks amazing. Fisker's resume includes the BMW Z8 and the Aston Martin DB9, and the EMotion's gull-wing and scissor-doored shape looks stunning.

Self-Driving Lyft

Lyft is bringing an autonomous taxi service to CES. The ride-hailing company has teamed up with self-drive tech company Aptiv to offer show attendees autonomous rides in self-driving BMW 5 series cars.

The rides will only be offered to about 20 preset destinations and there will be a human ready to take the wheel if necessary, but it's one more step down the road to autonomy and another battlefront between Lyft and Uber.

What Were the Best Selling Pickup Trucks for 2017 in the US?

  • Robbie Clark

It isn't any big news that truck sales dominate the American market. Pickups from Detroit's Big Three were not only the best selling trucks in 2017, they were the best selling vehicles.

While total vehicle sales for 2017 were down compared to 2016, trucks sales continue to climb. In fact, only a handful of pickups were in the red in terms of sales in 2017. Many more models saw big gains last year. These were the best selling trucks for 2017.

10. Honda Ridgeline: 34,749

Who knew a re-designed truck bed was all it would take to get some positive reviews? After a two-year hiatus, the second-generation mid-size Ridgeline made a comeback in 2016 with the 2017 model year. It had a lot of the same things that the first generation had, like towing capacity, but what it didn't have were those polarizing "flying buttresses" on the truck bed. Good move, Honda.

The Honda Ridgeline just barely beat out the GMC Canyon (just over 32,000 units sold) to make it on our list of top 10 best selling trucks. But it is on pace to rise even higher. Sales were up a whopping 47 percent over 2016.

9. Nissan Titan: 52,924

[imageSource url="https://media.wheelscene.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/01/2016_nissan_TITAN_xd_02.jpg" id="12266" class="right"]

The second generation Nissan Titan was introduced in 2016 for model 2017, and some buyers are taking notice. Sales for the Nissan Titan were up an impressive 141 percent. Still, the numbers aren't at the level Nissan would like to see them.

One of the biggest hurdles for the Titan is its engine offerings. Right now you can get a gasoline V8 or a Cummins diesel. Both are great, but including a V6 option could really move some units. Nissan says a V6 is "in the plan," according to a recent interview, but a date was not announced.
